Is this as good as any of the other coated rods - Dewey for example?

Was thinking of getting one and a Dewey brass muzzle guide for my revolver.

Or are simple brass rods OK for pistols.?

Does the muzzle guide that comes on some pistol rods slide down the rod, or is it fixed at the handle end of the rod?

I always assumed a muzzle guide would be placed immediately behing the bore brush.

I thought we got to the bottom of your cleaning rod question here:

IMO: Brass or Stainless Steel uncoated rods cannot get nicked and pick up & hold grit, making the coated rod an abrasive lapping rod.

Brass muzzle guides fit in the muzzle and the cleaning rod slides in & out through them.

The brush or tip & patch hold the other end centered in the bore.

Yes, sorry. It was something of a repeat post.

It's just confusing when you read so many articles advising the use of coated rods. So much conflicting advice on the web is confusing for a novice. I know there are some who feel that brass isn't much better than alluminium.

However, you've given me good advice before, and so I'll take it again.

I've finally decided to go for the simple dewey pistol cleaning kits in 22 and 38sp, which come with simple brass rods with a looped end, muzzle guides, brushes and patch holders.

I'll get them from Midway.

Would it be reasonable to assume that the 22 rod will have a smaller diameter than the 38, or are they likely to be the same?

Thanks again for your help.

Different sizes on the rods.
A .38 rod won't fit a .22.
But a .22 rod will fit anything.

SO, one .22 rod is all you need to clean any caliber pistol.
The .22 cone-shaped bore guide will work for any caliber too.

It's only the brush, jag, and patch sizes that you need to have in each caliber.

I'd appreciate it if you could explain to me why some muzzle guides come with rubber o rings, and others don't.

Is it only coated rods that need O rings to avoid scratching off the coating?

Dewey has an all calibre patch holder. Would you advise buying a bigger one from another manufacturer for 38 calibre or is the universal one OK?

I realise that the correct brush size is essential, but does patch holder size matter as long as you're using a big enough patch?

What's your opinion on the use of jags as opposed to patch pullers?

I have no idea why Dewey uses the O-ring, but I imagine you are correct in surmising it has to do with the coating getting scratched. Maybe also as a wiper to clean the rod each pass?
However that doesn't make a lot of sense, as when you pulled the rod out, the gunk on the o-ring would wipe back on the rod when you pushed it back the other way.

Cleaning rod tips?
I find many of the "universal" one too big for .22 bores.
I have several nylon, aluminum, and brass ones, but the one I use all the time is an old GI steel one for the M-16.
It is small enough to work in everything from .22RF on up.

I do prefer caliber specific jag tips for final bore cleaning, as they force the patch to conform to the rifling grooves better then a loose patch on a slotted tip.

Normally, I start out with a slotted tip to do the initial dirty work, and finish with a caliber specific jag for the final finish cleaning.
