Austin - The Glenn Hegar Campaign for Texas Comptroller announced today its support of a tax-free weekend for sportsmen leading up to the fall hunting season.

"It is my hope that this 'Back to Hunt' tax-free weekend will provide relief to Texas hunters and fishermen as they pass along their love of the sport to a new generation," Hegar said. "Implementing a tax-free weekend for sportsmen in Texas will stimulate new hunting participation while also increasing economic activity."

In the 82nd legislative session, Senator Hegar authored Senate Bill 1411 which proposed a state sales tax holiday for firearms, ammunition, hunting equipment, and hunting accessories.

"Texas is a great place for men and women who love the great outdoors," Hegar continued. "A 'Back to Hunt' tax-free weekend will help us pass along our values, heritage, and belief in our 2nd amendment rights to future generations, just as my dad and grandfather passed along to me when I was a youth."

Other states, including Louisiana and South Carolina, have adopted similar sales tax holidays.

Upon implementation in both states, a sales tax holiday for hunting goods prompted increased sales of all taxable merchandise over the holiday weekend as consumers drawn towards stores to purchase goods eligible for the sales tax holiday exemption purchased significant quantities of other taxable items.

As the cases of Louisiana and South Carolina suggest, implementing a sales tax holiday for hunting goods in Texas would prompt similar increases in sales tax revenues over the holiday weekend.

In addition to increasing overall sales tax revenues, the hunting sales tax holiday proposed could trigger increases in other state revenue streams, such as park entrance and hunting and fishing license fees.

The Hegar Campaign encourages all Texans to go online and pledge their support by signing the petition:www.glennhegar.com
