Update on Fatal Shooting at 500 Gulfgate Mall Center

February 8, 2008 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested following an attempted robbery that ended with a fellow suspect fatally shot at 500 Gulfgate Center Mall about 9:55 p.m. on Wednesday (Feb 6).

Omari Duana Stephens (b/m, DOB: 6-24-83) is in custody and charged with aggravated robbery in the 177th State District Court. A second suspect, identified as Calvin Earl Taylor (b/m, DOB: 6-4-84), was shot multiple times by the victim he tried to rob, Keenan Procter, 36. Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Procter, who has a valid concealed handgun permit, was not injured.

The shooting will be referred to a Harris County grand jury.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants R. Odom and J. Shirley reported:

Suspects Stephens and Taylor attempted to rob Mr. Procter at gunpoint on a parking lot when Procter fatally shot Taylor. Stephens attempted to leave the location in a vehicle, but was subsequently detained by a Harris County Precinct Six Deputy Constable.

You're probably right. I would be surprised if it gets that far. Then again, jury selection may be dumber than you think possible.

There have been a rash of robberies in Houston. Perps wait until you go to take the trash to the curb, in the parking lot of a grocery store or mall, et cetera and rob / kill / kidnap you. On the Home Invasion side they are dressing up like the power / gas company, like police, solicitors, etc to rob /. kill / kidnap you.

The more than this happens, the fewer their are to continue perpetrating the crimes.

Another thing to think about is the fact that the surviving suspect can be charged with the murder of his accomplice through association. I assume that the Grand Jury will look at this also.

I am not sure if it is a law in TX but it is in Louisiana.

When I was living in Chicago back in the late 70s, the cops would pretend to be utility workers to get into people's homes. Must still work.

i had someone come up to my door several months ago wearing a tshirt and jeans with a hat pulled low over his face... he knocked on the door announcing himself as the local cable company. There was no marked cable truck or uniform or hat with the cable company name on it... plus it was almost 10pm and my cable was working. grabbed my 45 and waited patiently on the other side of the door for him to sh*t or get off the pot. he left for the neighbors house. I then walked around to get a good look at him which is about the time he left. This also happened in Texas BTW.

dont open the door to the utility company in the middle of the night ;)

So the victim drew down on the robbers who were holding him up at gun-point and shot one multiple times?

Man, going for your gun when the bad guy already has his pointed at you?

They DO grow them big in Texas, don't they?

BG is used to compliance. He's expecting you to reach back and produce your wallet. Imagine his suprise when you deliver a handfull of bullets at 800+ f/sec instead. Not even time to say "Oh **it!" .............. Practice, gents.

Wow a rash of shootings in the Houston area by CHL and general good guys and yet the bad guys don't seem to be getting the message.

It is a bit odd that the logic goes something like ... when a state gets concealed carry, the crimes rates immediately drop because criminals are afraid that they might encounter a person carrying a gun.

If they are that smart to descrease their level of crime far enough to cause a drop in crime rates, then you would think negative reinforcement of their fellow hoodlums being gunned down with some frequency should cause them to all but stop committing such crimes, but that doesn't appear to be the case. You would especially think that with cases such as Joe Horn who gunned down two felons during the commission of a burglary by shotgunning them in their backs, the case repeatedly making headlines and the nightly news, that criminals would find other ways to make money.

Or as in the case in Dallas of the junkyard owner (and resident) who gunned down 1 burglar, killing him, that maybe folks would get the message, yet a few days later, another tried the same thing and the junkyard owner killed him as well...with a shotgun, and the shootings being 100% up and up.

Maybe just maybe, firearms are not so much of a deterrent to criminals as they are a boost to the ability of good guys to be able to defend themselves against criminals. Ya think?

Good shoot, criminals are dumb. As Charles Bronson says you got to kill them all, or they just come back like roaches. Since the bad guys outnumber the cops, there has to be civilian patrol, to help them. A CHL should even make cops feel more secure.

was shot multiple times by the victim he tried to rob
Wow, they're referring to the CC holder as a victim. Usually it's the guy that gets shot.

That's Phase I.

Phase II: referring to the fellow who that robber attempted to rob as a would-be or intended victim, rather than simply victim.

After all, if a woman shoots a man whose intent is to rape her, preventing that crime, she's not a rape victim -- just the opposite. Cases like this result in one less victim, rather than one more.
