I know one can apply for a CHL online now, and the nearest range offers proficiency courses for 150 bones, but how much is the actual application fee? The FAQ on the website was less than helpful, and I can't find out without giving up my SSN and my life history over a non-secure connection, which I am NOT okay with.

Someone tell me so I can get this out of the way quickly.

140 dollar fee is right unless you meet one of a handfull of exceptions. Most instructors have all necessary application material on hand 'though, I've not been aware of any problems applying online. I've done it myself several times-both for the license and the instructors recertifications. Most instructors will charge $100 to $150 and the biggest number now do the fingerprints, photographs and assist with the applications.

The assistance with the application is worthwhile as DPS is very particular about how they want the application filled out and it is can be easy to fill it out incorrectly on your own.
