HOUSTON (AP) - Two teenagers were injured in an explosion when they used a sledgehammer to extract gunpowder from shotgun shells and bullets, police said.
Authorities were investigating whether the 16-year-old boys were trying to make homemade fireworks the night of July 4.

The teens were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital with first-, second- and third-degree burns, Harris County Fire Marshal Mike Montgomery said. The hospital did not release any information about the victims.

Police said the teens were grinding powder from the shells and bullets with a hammer, setting off the blast in a Harris County home.

Investigators seized bullets, a homemade discharging device and a videotape the youths made to document their efforts, police said.

EDIT: Wait, derp, misread part of the article. Why the frell were they tring to "grind" the stuff out, anyway? wouldn't it have been easier just to grab some pliers and wobble the bullets out, or to pry the shotgun shells' crimped part open? Morons.

I love it when people my age do stupid things and hurt themselves. I mean, y'know, maybe if you're dumb enough to set sparks off next to a pile of explosive, or if you're stupid enough to convince your friends to run you over with a car, maybe, just maybe, you're too dumb, and this is the world's way of cleaning your brainless self out of the gene pool.
