I still say the AR-10 with a 20" barrel chambered in .308 with nice glass can't be beat for Texas.

fair enough I just want hear all the different opinions and let everyone share their experiences

There isn't a "typical Texas deer hunt". If you hunt the piney woods of Deep East Texas, 50 to 75 yards may be the longest shot you get. It's very much like the Deep South of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Then if you're hunting in the desert mountains of the Trans-Pecos region, you may very well get a shot of 300+ yards. But generally, you can't go wrong with something like a bolt action rifle in something like .270, 7mm-08 or 30-06/ 308.

thanks, ok a typical san angelo, texas deer hunt shots ranging from 30-350 yards

Remington VTR .308.

While I don't particularly like the looks of the VTR, I am a Remington 700 fan through and through. The .308 is a fine cartridge with a lot of range and flexibility. Of the choices you posted, definitely that one, with the Weatherby in 30-06 a close second.

fair enough i appreciate everyone's votes and I love to read what each person's personal fave is in deer rifles heck why not through in those yote guns too

6mm Remington, that's the gun I've used 95% of the time since I started hunting as a kid. Never had a reason to try a 300 yd shot on deer yet though. But I did take about a 400 yarder on some coyotes, saw the dust luck up right under his chest! Next time...

I hunt mostly with 7x57 and 30-06, I also have .270, .308, .300 Winny, .300 Savage, 45-70 etc. that could all be used for deer hunting. If using factory ammo either the .308 or 30-06 would be just about perfect, although bigger than absolutely required for Texas deer. Basically anything from .243 Win to 30-06 will work fine.

I either use a CZ 527 in .223 or a Rem 700 in 8mm Mauser, most any centerfire will do a fine job.

I picked up the Weatherby scoped combo in 30-06 this year. I am pleased as punch. Its a good shooter, less than 1" at 100 yards. The price was right, got it for just under 500 on sale. Got two deer so far, one at 225yrds, the other at 10yrd. It is well worth the budget price.

I'm partial to my Savage 110 in .30-06, with Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40. However, from the choices you listed, I'd have to go with the Weatherby combo in .30-06.

The '06 is more of a do-all cartridge for Texas hunting than most others. The range is limited only by one's skill. Inside of a couple of hundred yards, most anything will do okay...

Yall make a lot of sense. Keep it coming guys love to hear all the different ideas lets hear some hunting stories too! I will start. On opening morning this year i took two identical spikes completely by accident. The first one was at fifty yards and my grandads 308 slammed him so i looked away whilst i caught my breath. When i looked up again i saw my spike running so i put another one through the boiler room. I decided to go look for a blood trail and when i got where the first had taken place there was a dead spike. So i walked about eighty more yards and there lay another one. I about died laughing and then it hit me!! I have to clean two deer at the same time now! =]

I haven't hunted in a couple of years. IMO, pick a rifle that fits the typical shooting conditions where you hunt. In my case, most of my shots were under 40 yards so something like a .357 Mag levergun carbine is more than adequate, and carries/handles much easier than a 22" barreled bolt gun in one of the more typical hunting calibers.

I hunt occasionally around the Premount area. I just picked up a RRA AR15 6.8 spc for the brush, 3x9x40 buckmaster scope w/BDC, and yes for fun. My 30-06 kicks abit hard to effectivly hit more than one javalina in a pack before they run off (they sell soooooooo bad don't they?). The ranges I shoot doesn't require a large rifle. I honestly did not know what BRUSH was till I saw South Texas. That's whay I went with the 6.8
But I know a few people who swear by the balistic tip winchester .223 bullets that hunt the same area with great results. Mainly model 700's.
