Hello, I'm new to this forum. Just wondering if anybody has had any experience or luck hunting texas public land for hogs. Never hunted public land before, fixiin to give it a wirl. I live in alvarado, tx(just south of fort worth), looking for a good place to start within a couple hours drive. Any advice would be appreciated.:D

I imagine your best bet is to check with TP&WD. Their website will give you the regional office; those folks could either give you the information or direct you to a more local office and some help there.

They are hard to find on public land

...because there they are mostly nocturnal.

It can be done, though, and is lots of fun. I've never hunted up your way, so no suggestions for local opportunities for you, but TPW is a good place to start. Aquila Lake (down towards Waco from where you are) is supposed to have some good-sized hogs, but I don't know if it is archery-only or if firearms are allowed. TPW can tell you.

Get you public hunting permit if you haven't already. The maps book has lots of good information on what can be hunted where.

Good luck.

says in my book feral hog season ends march 15, and any legal means allowed. I'm looking at North Toledo Bend WMA, is it the one you are talkin about. Looks pretty hoggy by the map in the book, I'm gonna try looking it up on google maps, for a arial shot. I love google maps, if anyone hasn't tried it, it is cool for getting a good idea of the type of land you will be hunting.

That's probably it, just changed the rules since last season. I looked at it last spring before the new books came out. When I saw the map, "hoggy" is the word that came to mind.:D If you go, let me know what you think! I got hogs eating my place up down here this year what with all the rain, so I'm probably just going evening/night hunt it some after deer season. I saw one this year and got a shot at it with my open sighted .357 Blackhawk through some heavy grass at about 65 yards, and I'm pretty sure I shot over it. I had to hold high cause I could only see about half his back in the grass. :banghead: For the last two weeks I've been out of action with a bad flu which has ruined, pretty much, the rest of my season, but when I finally shake this stuff, I'm gonna get back out there after them pigs.
