Small talk: My stuff
Left-hander A.J. Murray has been sent back to the minor league camp to continue stretching out his innings as he prepares to transition back to starting after a season as a reliever. Murray stopped by to chat a little about his "stuff," and we're not talking about his change-up. We got the goods on Murray's favorite gadgets and toys. A hint: He might be a Guns & Ammo subscriber:

Are you a big gadget guy?

Not at all. I don't text unless somebody texts me first. I've got a Wii. Bowling is my favorite. I play some Tiger Woods golf, but mostly bowling. I like bowling in real life. It's nice to be able to bowl at home.

Have you ever let go of the controller and hit the TV?

I've actually seen somebody throw the remote against the wall by mistake, but every time I've ever let go of it, I've had the strap wrapped around my wrist.

So, if you aren't a huge video guy and you aren't big on having the fanciest phone in the clubhouse, what is something you are into?

My guns.

Well, um, OK. Hopefully there are no assault rifles in the collection.

My guns are all used for hunting. I've got seven guns: two shotguns, two rifles, a muzzle loader and a couple of .22s.

You are a regular militia member. How did you amass that arsenal?

I grew up hunting in Utah. I was raised that if you shot something, you ate it.

What was your first gun? What's the most you have spent on one?

My dad gave me a Marlin .22-gauge rifle for Christmas one year. I must have been about 10. A couple of years ago, I bought a Ruger .25-06 rifle. That was about $500 to $600, and then I put a scope on it that cost another $300 or $500, somewhere in there.

And what have you done with these weapons?

In October, I shot the biggest deer of my life. It was a hunt in an area that you have to submit to a lottery for. ... It took me eight years to finally get chosen. The antlers were 5x5, and it was 23 inches across.

Any exotic hunts?

My goal in life, well, at least where hunting is concerned, is that I'd like to have a deer, elk and mountain lion. I'd also like to have a bearskin rug from a bear I got. If I'm in the big leagues long enough, I'd like to have the money to do some exotic hunts. But I haven't done any yet.

At least the guy is expressing one of his hobbies as shooting and hunting. Anybody in the public eye has to keep their image in check. Heck, now he has alinated PETA and all the other anti-hunters. Could you imagine if he admitted to having an AR-15.........goodbye endorsements.

I am willing to bet that he has alot more in his collection then he admits to.

Although I am a competitive target shooter, I will often break the ice with an unknown person in conversation about guns that I hunt, and most of my guns are for hunting. I find that hunting is often more 'acceptable' as primary means of gun ownership, -only to keep a gun conversation civil, and especially to get a feel for the interviewer. Although it would be a complete toss-up when discussing guns. My right to. I like to compete. I have the right to defend myself. I hunt. My dad had guns. His father before him had guns. I have them. Therefore I have guns. Many more than seven.

He's young, and with an a$$-reporter, his answers could have been a lot worse.

I remember when I could rattle off the 3 or 6 or 7 guns I had. I guess I should count them and maybe even make a list. Of course, there's also the nice option of honestly answering with "I don't know."
Militia member? No, I have guns to protect myself from those militia members.

Nobody is going to bother with the ".22 gauge rifle" comment?

:D

The interviewer blows my mind with their prideful ignorance. Your job is to at least BS well enough to make it look like you know what you are talking about. The other people that you work with are employed to fix your idiocacy in post, to make it look like you successfully BS'ted your way through it.

All views aside, a collective journalistic failure! :)
