Was going to reload a bunch after surgery (deviated septum, septoplasty) and maybe shoot, but good grief... tough breathing through the mouth for seven days.

Anyway, the splints are out. Felt like I was waterboarded... did loose eight pounds. But breath through the nose again I do.

So, any of you guys, when in such situations, did you have any desire to tinker with guns while on the mend?

Same here, except mine was a detached retina four weeks ago. Missed the dove opener (well, I was there, but couldn't shoot). Did have a nice day and a good meal with some THR members though.

Missed the Harley more than shooting though...

I've had 4 knee surgeries now. Each one leaves me at home and immobile for about 12 weeks. The first 3 I tried and failed at reloading. It was painful to sit at the bench. The fourth one, I did some trading and got a rough carbine and worked on making it new (easy with it being a Hi-Point and the customer service dept sending me everything for free).

I did take the time of the last surgery to learn how to play the guitar... Use the time wisely.

I had a hardware store implanted in my left foot a few years back. Still shooting those reloads. :D

I couldn't walk, but I could sit at the bench and work the dickens out of that press.

Broke my right arm few years back , had to learn to shoot south paw then for a few weeks , now i didnt become no annie oakley with the left hand but I did become what i feel is considered capable .

Had a deviated septum and a stapes replacement about 4 years ago. I second how much I hated those splints. I got caught up on a lot of reading.

I had a full right hip replacement about this time last year at the ripe old age of 34. I was looking forward to a lot of time to work putter around the house, reload, etc. However family REALLY wanted to be be helpful and I had trouble telling my parents to leave me be. At the time it was a nuisance, but in retrospect I'm glad I got to spend as much time with my Dad as I did (for the record he's still here and going strong), as I know eventually I won't have the luxury.

Nearly lost my right arm 4 years ago. Acquired 5 or 6 more guns before I was capable of loading or shooting again. Then I loaded and taught many people to load for 2 years while going to therapy but unable to continue my line of work. I had to shoot south paw for roughly 3.5 years. Partially handicap now and will never be able to shoot heavy hitting long guns and had to develop a new way of even shooting long guns. But life goes on and could of been worse. I almost had a hook!

I always want to...but sometimes have been unable to. I had an elbow problem for about 3 years. It was so painful that I couldn't even wash my hands without pain. Simply pushing the cylinder release on a revolver was more pain than I wanted to deal with. After years of trying to fix it, 5 cortisone shots, and two surgeries later...I'm back to doing what I want. It took a full year after the last surgery before I could really use my right arm the way I wanted to.

While I was laid up after the first two surgeries there was really no using my right arm at all, so there was no choice about whether to mess with the guns or not. I played a lot of gun related video games though...that was as close as I got!

I'm glad it's behind me.

When I re-injured my back 5 years ago, all my guns were incredibly clean, and my stainless guns were highly polished.

Glad the ole sniffer is a snortin again.

You give me strength guys! Some of you are tough!

Had my first real sleep last night. And yep, went by the pawn shops some today and 7 hours of work at the office experimenting with c# autocomplete (always fascinating.)

I will say this guys, even if you are feeling like you-know-what, don't let it get you down and not do SOME tinkering. If your operation is coming, prepare! Get projects lined up.

I did load up some .45 LC 240 JHPs to the warm side for my Toklat .454, but I do wish I had cleaned up my gun room while I had my chance!

Glad the ole sniffer is a snortin again.

Thanks 460! Hope your back is back!

And Jenrick, ALWAYS spend time with ones family. That time is never wasted.

Three shoulder rebuilds 2005-2007, long dry spell. Reloaded A LOT of ammo in those years. Kept me from going nuts spending time at my bench. Never got back to shooting as before. 2-3 boxes at trap is it now. Shoot more pistol, but it's not the same.

I did not realize there are so many broken down old fogies on this forum...yeah you guys with the Sears replacement parts. Now when I had my knee replaced and inbetween whining to all who would listen about my pain, i built a couple of AR's then drove to Texas and hunted hogs five months after surgery. I still whine but am receiving less symphatetic responses than before.

A couple of knee surgeries have kept me sidelined for awhile. Sitting down was my only option for the most part so I use to spend a lot of time at the reloading bench. When I got a bit more mobile and could get around again I took my reloads to the range and tried them out. Probably the most enjoyable time I have ever spent following surgery and physical therapy.

I had open heart surgery a few years ago. It took a few weeks before I felt good enough to go to the range and shoot the 22's.

But as soon as I did, I did.

We moved during the middle of all that too. My wife and a bunch of ladies from church handled all that, but I had to ride my motorcycle (BWM K-1200LT) to the new place, a few miles away. I'm sure my doctor would have had a fit, but there was no one else who could ride it.

I was VERY careful.

Gonna have cataract surgery Sept 30th.
No shooting :(

But it will vastly improve my eye sight in the long run.

I'm VERY squeamish about something touching my eyes, but I'm legally blind in my left eye, so it can't come soon enough.

Cataract surgery is a cakewalk, I had it on my right eye six months ago. Don't sweat it, the anesthesia they use now will make you not care or know the surgeon is touching your eye.

It's kind of neat watching the cloudiness go away and the new clear lens getting slipped in.

I had hernia surgery last year.

For the first couple weeks after I did not have any desire to do any reloading or shooting. Once I started feeling better my wife would not let me do any reloading as bullets are heavy and working the press looked to physical. I went shooting about a month after but my wife would not let me carry anything. Fortunately my brother went shooting with me. He had to do all the lifting. I found standing and shooting my pistols to be somewhat fatiguing but not uncomfortable so all in all it was a good day.
If was almost 2 months before I got the OK from my wife to do any reloading. Fortunately I did not have a lot of stuff to reload yet.

Right shoulder surgery. Learned to shoot pistols left handed. Took 2 months to heal.

20 years ago I had a fusion of C4 and C5 in my neck due to a herniated disc. Lots of upper body rehab and the doc asked if I shot a pistol and I replied yes, and he said nothing stronger than 22LR. Went out and bought a Ruger 4522 and had fun with it for 6 months. Did eventually get back in shape. Last December I had stomach ulcers that almost bled me out going to the emergency room with a BP of 77 over 45 with inverted vision and not much energy. Spent 7 days in hospital with 3 units of blood. I am almost back to speed now having just completed my new gun room in our new Retirement Villa.
Yes, you can take a lick and get back to ticking, it just takes a little gumption to get back up and get going again!

Let's see I've 6 eye surgeries since 5 years old one hernia and both shoulders worked on. Shoulders were the worst, ever try eating one handed or tieing your shoes. Got lucky on those as they gave me so.e serious pain meds never needed them after surgery pain was almost none existent.

May 2014: Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, HIPEC for short (yeah, look THAT up). :uhoh:

I was home from work for over 2 months. No shooting but a whole bunch of cleaning and oiling, Harleys were sitting too. About the only thing the docs actually gave me permission to do was walk. Been clear now coming up on 1.5 years.

To hell with ammo prices, doing some shooting (and riding) too these days.

edit to add: BTW had a deviated septum fixed in 1979. I'll skip the details but at that time it was pretty barbaric.

I am the other way around, have been a 'mouthbreather' all my life. Using a C-PAP machine at night, I use the full mask that covers mouth and nose - cannot stand the little nose tubes!

Had rotator cuff surgery on my left shoulder in 2007 and out almost a year. Did a lot of shooting off the bench. Semi autos were easier to shoot. 2010 I destroyed my right rotator cuff in a bad fall on ice. Out over a year. Did some shooting off the bench shooting left side. The repair has retorn along with bicep tendon. Most of my shooting now is .22RF. All my WWII milsurps(8x57,303,762x54r,8x56r) are hardly shot. Been working with it retorn since. No strength and constant pain. Can't take another year from work. Not a happy camper. I have given up alot of things I can't do with my right arm. Although I can still lift a fork, scratch my a$$ and flip the bird.

Messed up rotator cuff and busted up scapula in 03 from a motorcycle wreck. I was lucky that I did not need surgery. 3 months of PT from a couple 20 something masochistic therapists (good looking therapists by the way) got my shoulder straightened out.
