I've been reading and searching and cross referencing as much info as I can about the .40 S&W load. Today was my day to take my promo/red dot loads to the range and fire them in my new M&P 4.25. What a great experience! First I fired a store bought box of federal 180gr to see how the gun performed (flawless) and then moved to my test subjects.... Berrys 165gr with 4.0 promo oal 1.12 which also ran the gun perfectly as did 4.2gr promo.

Thanks guys for taking the time to put up such valuable information!

Yeah cracked you will find that the guys on here are a wealth of information and are quite friendly and always willing to help someone be safe and produce a good load :D also welcome to THR

Welcome! Lots of great info here. I started my reloading life here about 3 years ago and have had great success thanks largely to the forum and guys like bds.

4.0 red dot/promo is still my go-to for MBC lead pills for .40. Very accurate and reliable. :)

I have a question for new users of Promo. Did you buy Promo (which only comes in 8 lbs and would be a substantial commitment) because that was the only powder available or because you were planning to use Red Dot load data by weight as indicated by Alliant and bought Promo instead of Red Dot?

You probably weren't asking me, but I bought 8 lbs of Promo back when it was available because I had already worked up lots of loads with Red Dot but it wasn't on any shelf or website I could find.

I actually prefer Red Dot merely because of the extra level of safety provided by the unmistakeable colored flakes, but that's nothing that the usual careful reloading practices would require.

Promo has been doing perfectly well for me in place of red dot. My loads are typically about .1 grain heavier per charge (using the same orifice) with Promo vs. red dot, but none of my "good loads" seem to shoot any worse or better.

It doesn't get a lot better than BDS for all of the weird 40 S/W reloading information, lemme tell ya !

I think he has stock in that round, I do :D

BDS - I'm one of those that found Promo at a great price and since I had seen your thread with the workups I decided to jump in. I haven't loaded any yet, but I will be using it for 9mm, 40 S&W and 45 ACP based on your great tips. And some 38spcl as well.
I went all in and jumped in to 16 pounds, figured that I might as well since I haven't seen any Win231/HP38 available in all that time.
And, my guns gotta eat -- right?

Promo

I shoot trap and usually purchase promo 16lbs at a time. That way the lot # is the same (2 jugs in a box)
