Well this thread is to thank all of you who help Delfine and and myself by replying to This one i started in Oct..

thanks for all your advise and encouragement. After dealing with many things, including way to high a percentage of neaderthal brained clerks, and thinking we both had it figured out a couple of times only to decide "nah, that's not it either". we had another "she handles a gun for less than 2 mins and falls if not in love, into heavy liking " incident.
in two weeks (when she finishes paying the lay-away) She will be the proud new owner of an XD9 service model.

and we didn't even enter that Gander Mtn to BUY anything!! we went in there b/c i wanted her to have a look at one of those Stoeger Cougar 8000s. GM was the last stop on our multi purpose trip to houston, and wouldn't have been a stop at all if either of the other two shops we at least attempted to visit had had one (or in one case been open today. probably closed to re-org/rearrage after the HGCA show).

anyway went in, i headed for the gun counter while Delfine made a side trip, (more on what this inadvertantly caused in a minute). NO stoeger Cougars remaining at the moment (last one sold few hours before) :( but there IS a Berretta 8045 cougar in the used case, this'll do for the "see how this one feels in your hand" test:) , so we paitiently wait for the clerk who is showing anotehr customer what he needs to put where on the new style 4477 so as to finish the sale of an M44. clerk gets a second comes over to see us, and steps on it in a (in short term afterthought) humorous way, ie he adressed me instead of the the two of us as a group to see who needed what, got called on it by Delfine (who due to her side trip, didn't know he'd offered, and i'd deferred, his help before he went to retreive the aforementioned M44 from the backroom). we get it straightened out as to who's the one shopping for a gun and reassure the guy of no harm no foul.

At this point David (our sales guy) started performing in a manner that many a gun salesman would be wise to copy.

he pulls out the cougar, hands it directly to HER, not to me to pass to her (this beats 7 out of 10 others out there) it's alright, yadda yadda. Delfine doesn't seem to impressed with the thing.. two mins later, the cougar's back in the case, David suggests we look at the XDs while we're at it and we do so. being a SMART sales guy and knowing that he is going to have to call in the info off m44 guy's 4477, he says "hold on a sec let me show you what come with these XDs", heads into the back room and retrieves an XD shipping case with the "XD Gear" inside, does the "with each XD you get a spare mag, X,Y, and Z" routine while pointing to each, then leaves it with us to look over while he calls in the 4477.

Call made David returns, "wanna see one?" Delfine asks to see the "standard sized one", and is handed a OD framed Service model XD9 (i'd already assured her that an all black model is readily available) a little fondling and a try of the trigger later the David asks her if she wants to know how it comes apart for cleaning... as much as 10-15 mins of nothing but the three of us yakking, and taking it apart and re-assembling it in turns, passes. Delfine turns to me and says "I LIKE this gun". an hour later Delfine'd traded a shotgun she no longer wanted. for $260 toward the XD (I'd told her to expect MAYBE $150 for the shotgun), dropped an additional $100 on the layaway ( leaving around another $160 to be paid after Feb 2nd, ie payday), and was grinning like a wolf as we headed for the door.
to say today was fruitful is a slight understatment.

course now i have to take a look at/for something like a set of tru-glo sights for it b/c she'd like to have them be brighter.

again thank you for all your help and suggestions guys, and yes the XD was a surprise to me, i thought she'd dismiss it as being to "glock-like" in appearance.

Sounds like she bought herself a fine piece - I have several myself...

Does she understand it's mechanics - that it is striker fired and always cocked but not locked in the traditional sense?

I love stories with happy endings. :p

Please make sure to write chapter 2, wherein we, er, she buys ammo and a range report.

You're a wise man Detritus.
