That's it for Russian steel case, right?

I know the previously approved import permits were to be honored, but with Western banks no longer issuing letters of credit for Russian dealings, various sanctions, etc., that has to be it even if they wanted to export ammo in the middle of a large ground war, right?

I wonder about other Eastern European manufacturers. I hazily recall some Red Army Standard being made in Ukraine. I wonder how eager the Poles, Hungarians, Serbs, etc. will be to export ammo at the present moment.

I was watching a few online retailers yesterday after the invasion began. Wolf x39 started flying off the shelf like hotcakes. I don't think you'll find any online retailer with Russian made ammo left at this point. I've talked with a vendor that had permits for months to come for imported Russian ammo. He doubts he'll see any of the ammo he's had on order. Even if it makes it to US customs I wonder if the Gov't will allow it to leave Customs. I think we're done seeing cheap steel case ammo from Russia. Similar to what happened to China's ammo back in the 90s.

Can't say I'd actually want to buy their ammo. In the past I have bought Russian for PM pistols. I'd rather buy from American sources first, obviously, and other Euro sources. Pretty much from anywhere but Russia and China, now. I do notice the usual online sources I use are out of Russian 9mm. I suppose people got it while it was both cheap and available.

With everything that's implied with the current state of world affairs, worrying about the loss of cheap Russian ammo seems, well, pretty low on the priority list.

Just sayin'.

Absolutely. Just thinking this through.

I liked steel case stuff for my Mak-chambered stuff. The rest I mostly want brass casings so I can reload.

Just at my Lgs asked him about it, he said the rep that deals with it told him that all the ammo already over there is being bought up for the war

Waiting for the first posting of "I have a 1000 round [insert gun games activity here] weekend coming-up and was counting on getting cheap Russian steel case ammo. What ever am I going to do?"

I am happy to have stocked-up on new production Russian 7.62x54mmR last fall when the theoretically upcoming import ban was announced. I am doing OK on 7.62x39mm, as it is mostly for strategic reserve and not active shooting.

You never know what the future will bring- buy it when available, and stack it deep.

Luckily--for what that word is worth--there are other sources for steel-case ammo.

PSA actually is building a factory for steel cartridge case production. Where a need and and an opportunity exists, the free market will seek to fill it.

There's a slightly complicated side to this, too--Wolf also makes steel-case ammo in [drumroll] Taiwan . . .

I don’t buy Russian ammo, but I would buy their primers if they were available. I guess one less primer source now.

Other countries also make cheap steel cased ammo, at least they used to be cheap.

I've got some Herter's brand steel cased, some made in Russia, but also Hungary and Indonesia.

Yeah, still got some semi non corrosive Chinese stuff left, too.

I ordered what I assume will be my last case of Russian sourced ammo for the foreseeable future yesterday morning. Wolf steel case 55gr .223, snagged it for 30 cents per round w/free shipping.

Doubt I'll ever see that price for .223 or 5.56 ever again.
That was an excellent buy. I have not seen $0.30/rd wolf in a long while. I have a couple cases of each 9mm/.223 wolf and one sealed spam can. I can buy brass cased 9mm for $299/1000 right now so I'll shoot that for now probably.

I'm curious if these new developments vis a vis russia/Ukraine will be reflected in the supply chain, more specifically to this thread...ammo. I know Wolf and Tula will be virtually non existent but will it cause another run on outrageously priced ammo? Media buzz can spur this stuff on, gotta remember all the MSM stuff is calibrated for effect, it's either 10x worse than it's actually being portrayed or it sounds 10x worse than it actually is, and fear and uncertainty is great for sellers with access to goods.

I think the ammo situation leveled off quite a while ago as I'm seeing a pretty good supply of guns and ammo at my local haunts and its very reasonably priced yet others on here talk as if they are no better off now than they were at the start of 2020 in terms of prices and availability of ammo and reloading components. I don't know, but I would guess maybe it has to do with merchants and retailers milking the situation a lil bit, maybe.

I know if I go online, I find outrageous prices, but if I go to my LGS he is fully stocked and priced to move..... I don't get it. I can only imagine where this new war may take us, God forbid a new covid variant to send things spiraling out of control..... yikes.

Nobody knows, of course. My suspicion is that if all/much the cheap steel cased stuff is gone suddenly, ammo will be expensive. Every ammoseek screen has/had a whole bunch of steel cased (usually Tula, Wolf, etc.) as the cheapest options. If that is no longer a thing, everyone will be after the brass cased ammo and I imagine it will be bid up.

As of this posting, roughly 16:50 hrs EST, SG Ammo seems to be sold out.
Lucky Gunner still has some in stock.
I only have 1 rifle chambered for the Russian shorty, and it's a tired olde SKS.
My stash is sufficient for me.
Oh, I also have a die set, just in case ;)

Hell, I've still got a little of that Clinton-era Chinese stuff around here somewhere!

By the time I was buying 7.62x39mm in mid-1994, it was starting to get hard to find. I do remember my friend telling me in the roughly 1990 timeframe that his Dad opened a sealed tin in the house and they were evicted to the garage by his Mom due to the fish paper smell.

Actually, 2 or 3 days ago SGAmmo pulled all the steel case off their site. I imagine that when things have sorted out internationally and everyone else is sold out, the stock will be put back up at market prices.

The key phrase being "at market prices"...

Hey, you can't blame the guy. A significant portion of his volume is probably disappearing due to all of this, and I'd guess we will see skinnier supplies on the cheap end of prices that help move volume.
