Went to the range the other day for the "maiden voyage" of my S&W .460 XVR (8 3/8"). Was happy to have the place to myself, as I didn't know what to expect of myself or the gun. Zeroed in a few at 25 yds ( the Hornady 200grs at ~2300fps, which is all I could find/afford locally!) Recoil is certainly noticeable, NOT unpleasant but rather exhilirating (I'm a big guy and I love this stuff!) What the heck, set up the 100yd target. Now I was truly disappointed to be at the range by myself, as my first attempt netted a three-shot 1 1/2" group about two inches wide right and a half inch high. Hey, maybe this is routine stuff for some of you guys, but to achieve that at 100yds with open sights...hey, I was EXCITED. I love this gun already, and thanks to Redhawk1 for consistently singing the praise of this piece!!!

Sounds like you are hooked now, all you have to do is get into reloading and the real fun begins.
The S&W 460 Mag is a great round. Keep us informed as to your progress in the future. :D

+1 to the 460. Every time i shoot it it brings a huge smile to my face. My personal favorite load is a 395g gc from cast performance with 32g of h-110 moving about 1600fps. Also 360g gc from cast performance w/ 37g h-110 @ about 1800 fps. I just like movin a huge hunk of metal at screamin speeds.

Just don't get any part of your body next to the cylinder gap!

I've seen pics and heard storys of a couple incidents in which these guns destroyed peoples thumbs!

Pics were gruesome!

I was easily hitting 5gal buckets with open sights at 90 and 100 yards with the Hornady SST load.

The best advice i can give to enjoy your .460 shooting session is to wear a shooting glove. I'm too cheap to buy one so i use my mountainbiking glove

+2 to the 460. I had mine out yesterday. Hadn't shot the 460 since last October because indoor range doesn't allow it. I had forgotten what a hoot this thing is to shot. The muzzle blast, flash, and the HEAT from the round going off is something to experience. It's a great round. Now to buy some dies and start reloading.

Congrats! Have fun with yours and stay safe!!

I'm impressed. I can barely hold that kind of group with a scoped rifle! Incredible handgun shooting, imo. Congrats.
