...which would possibly mean a new hand or filing the Rachel or both.

Not familiar with a S&W part called the "Rachel". Could you explain what that is and what it does? (smile)

I checked S&W website. They show 7 shot @ 38.9 oz. 6 shot @ 39.7 oz. So the 7 shot gun is about 3/4 oz lighter. FWIW, I definitely remember the listed weights of a 4 " 686 as being 41 oz at one time. I have no idea which is accurate. This was several years ago when they came with wood target girps. Perhaps the current rubber grips are lighter, or MIM parts are lighter than the old parts.

Catalog or website listed info, especially weights, are very often wrong. Getting a set of postal scales has been informative.
41oz is more like a GP 100. :)

I have 2 686Ps and both have some of the best DA triggers I've shot, but they're both target triggers.

This time of year I carry the 6" 686P in a clamshell shoulder rig, sometimes a scandium N-frame 327 TRR8 5" that weighs 35oz.

Taurus came out with a 617 which is their version of the 686 it has 7 rounds. Any known facts on this gun, I can't seem to find a 686, was thinking of the inexpensive Taurus, figured I could always sell it. It's I the mid 400 range. At least 1/3 less than the Smith.
They also make an 8 round version and a 6&5 round. Are the quality on these better than they used to be, I did have an Alloy model a decade ago that was decent.
