Effective at what? Actually they both very effective. People can make 500 yard shots with an iron sight AR. So actually, maybe the AR is more effective since even with a scope you are not gaining much effective range, but with the AR you have faster follow up shots.

Absolutely, the slant of the piece was that common sense people would like to see these rifles go away, but there aren't enough votes in Congress because of crazy gun owners, even if they showed a woman this time.

This is one I have always wondered about, too. Anyone who suggests that it is easier to fire a pistol-gripped rifle from the hip has never tried both side-by-side. The angle is actually less conducive to hip-firing than a conventional stock.
