Like everyone, I'm already trying to plan ahead to next season here in Colorado, but we've got some tough choices to make here. Everyone has differing numbers of points for elk and deer and we'd like to try to get everyone in on at least one hunt, but for some reason it seems tougher than normal this year. In the group of 6, we have Yours Truly with 1 elk point and 2 deer points, Buddy 1 with 2 elk and 2 deer points, Buddy 2 with 2 elk and 0 deer points, Buddy 3 with 1 elk and 0 deer points, Buddy 4 with 1 elk and 1 deer point, Buddy 5 with 2 elk and 5 deer points. I know that's confusing, now we're gonna make things worse. Some of us want to do a muzzleloader cow or bull hunt, and others are putting in for an RFW cow hunt (List A), still another will probably also have an archery hunt. Now, if we have our early seasons separate, that leaves either a 1st season elk hunt and or a 3rd season deer hunt together. But in order for everyone to be able to come on either of those hunts, we'd have to have both of those hunts be in a List B area in 1st season and/or 3rd season, which would also help if it was OTC. Still with me? Now let's make it worse, nobody wants to feel like they've wasted points by applying for a unit that requires much less than 1 or two points than they already have, which really only hurts one of the the guys as he is the only one with more than 2 deer points. However, we have the option of getting Buddy 5 in on a muzzleloader hunt, but with him doing a High Country deer hunt instead of an elk hunt, he doesn't waste his points, but it puts the muzzleloader hunt in a less desireable place. The original thinking was to keep everyone out of less hot water with the wives this year by reducing the Colorado hunts to just 2 instead of 3 plus an antelope hunt in Wyoming. But with the point problems and differing goals, it looks like there has to be three hunts for either elk or deer, plus some an antleope hunt or two, putting us back up to 4 or 5 hunts total.
Don't know what the heck to do at this point, especially because we don't know how the muzzleloader draw will play out.
Anybody else in a similar boat? Do you try to make everyone happy for each hunt, or just say, "every man for himself" for two hunts, then compromise on 1 hunt?
