The Barlow Knife

Actually I have found many of the novelty barlows take a very sharp edge...they just don't hold it well. These would be more for display than carry. They tend to have hollow bolsters and just don't wear all that well. But for many kids growing up in the 50s-60s these were the first knives they owned. I grew up watching many of these characters on TV and even listening to a few on the radio.
I grew up watching the Reruns of these guys. Like you said they come sharp sometimes but don't hold it edge very long. I have been rescuing them from Pawn Shops and Junk Stores during the Summer.

Well...for me it wasn't reruns...lol...it was the new episodes. Watching them on a new black and white TV before color came out. Even saw some at the movie matinees on Saturday.

That Imperial Barlow in the first post looks familiar. My father gave me one as my first knife, too, sometime back in the late 70s. Here tis:

A few years ago I picked up this Boker, which was a very good deal for about $30:

The Bokers are nice...mine is in red bone with heavy ridges milled in, very secure even when damp...

Another Barlow that didn't make the main pic in my OP is this Russell in stag...

You guys remind me about a lot of wood shavings and Band Aids from my youth.
You could carry a Barlow to school and nobody called SWAT.

Nice to learn about the "Barlow" knives....I have two....an Imperial made in the USA with plastic scales, maybe stainless blades & is an advertisement knife, the other is a Boker with better scales but still plastic (?) & carbon blades....it has the better of the steel in the blades of the two of them. The blades are the typical large and small.

Barlow pocket knifes

I have had several Barlows, I was wondering if there was a time they just stamped a # on it
