The best handgun for $200?

$200 limit for a gun just for fun?

I'd look out to see if I could still find a used (but beat up) S&W model 10 for that, but I think the days of $200 M10s (even those that look like they've been to hell and back) are gone.

A used Taurus 82. They are decent M10 copies (not exact copies). Try to get one that isn't so old (maybe look for the lock- yeah I know). The newer ones are more reliable (though most of these are good) and have MUCH better triggers.

A used Taurus 669, 66 or 65. The .357mag version is harder to find at that price than the 82 (harder to find at all used since the 82 is a mainstay of armed security companies, and few people part with their magnums it seems), but if you can find one...

A blackpowder replica revolver. The Uberti Remington 1858s and Colt 1860s are beautiful guns and aren't too terribly expensive. The black powder is a bit of work, but a lot of fun (I love the looks at the range when it belches that huge blast of fire and cloud of smoke).

A .22lr semi-auto rifle (I know you said hangun). They can be a lot of fun when you find the right one, they can be fired on most pistol ranges, and they are inexpensive to buy and to feed.

A .22lr pistol if you can find one at that price.

Hmm, after a little time has passed, I've thought more about your question. The more I think about it, the more I think black powder replica- 1858 Remington clone (.45cal), 1860 Colt Army (.45cal), Colt Navy (.36cal) by Uberti are all beautiful, affordable, and FUN revolvers.

I've seen quite a few H&R revolvers in great to decent shape for well under that. The 922 I have is not the gem of my collection, but it is fun and seems to be of decent quality.

The model 10's are a regional thing. Up here in the East most large PD's used the model 10's for decades prior to going to autos. I still see them going for around $125 to $175 for a good heavy barrel gun, holster worn but tight. I bought a nice (90%) model 15 for $199 two years ago and they had three on the shelf. Good deals can still be found used, just have to do the Pawn and Gun shop stroll for a while. I have also seen people score by mentioning to friends and family what you are looking for. Maybe Uncle Johnny has a gun he has been meaning to get rid of for years because Aunt Sally does not want it in the house. Bill
