bearingarms reports that Brian Fletcher, a NC man who was contracted to help NJ with disaster relief was charged with a felony there for bringing his NC-legal firearm with him. He only had one hour to assemble his crew and equipment, and since he expected the site to be dangerous he brought his firearm. He didn't realize NJ wouldn't honor his NC permit, and given the very short timeframe it never occurred to him to research NJ gun laws before leaving. He was waiting at the disaster site for further instructions when a police officer approached his truck and asked him what he was doing there. He explained and they discussed the disaster relief work, then the officer asked for his ID, which he presented, and as NC would require, informed the officer that he had a firearm in his vehicle. As a result he was booked on a class 2 felony and spent the night in jail. He got out in the morning on $25,000 bail. Apparently the best solution is a pre-trial intervention and pardon by Gov. Christie.

The article is at http://bearingarms.com/man-rushed-help-new-jersey-disaster-relief-now-faces-absurd-gun-charge/.

The wife has started a petition for him at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/support-brian-fletcher-vs-state-of-new-jersey. In her appeal she reproduces the text of the letter her husband sent to the relevant officials, which lays out all the details of the event (more clearly than the bearingarms article IMO).

You can also email Gov. Christie at http://www.state.nj.us/governor/contact/. I was going to post my text here but I stupidly lost it by copying the above links before pasting it.

Also, anybody in NC, it wouldn't hurt to contact your state officials and urge them to exercise whatever influence they can.

Signed the petition, don't know if it went through since it asked for a donation afterwards with no other way to proceed.

Good luck to him.
