Maybe one day. Bit right now i wouldnt do it. Its not the rounds per say. But i wont drop thst on a gun just for plinking period. Its got to have a real 'save my life' factor for that kinda dough. A walther p22 or a henry lever action is aboutt as expensive as i would be willing to go for a .22. Im happy with my $100 .22 rifle at the range and my buddies $60 revolver is fun as hell too. Looking for me a cheapie soon.

Let me get a little older, out of school, a better job. And that l might change.

"Let me get a little older, out of school, a better job."

That's how most of us did it. I bought my father a new .22 plinker for his 80th birthday. He had his own Smith Model 17 and his old Savage 23AA squirrel rilfe from the '30s among others. I had a Single Six I bought in '72 and a '63 Mountie. Buy good guns that you like and keep them and slowly add more when you can.

His plinker:

It's a Cooper Custom Classic Model 57.

I recently acquired a 4" 617 10 shot for $450 out the door. It looked like it had not been cleaned since it was new. LOTS of crud everywhere to include HEAVY carbon build up on top of the forcing cone. It had the requisite dings and scratches--but the lock up was solid, and no end shake.

After a few hours of cleaning and cleaning and cleaning and a few more hours of polishing with some Mothers, and a new set of Ahernds grips it looks brand new and shoots great with tight groups.

As people have said, you can't beat the fun factor and YES they are out there for a lot less than $700.

There is a case for one.

I'm very close to buying another .22 pistol. I bought a Heritage for 35 bucks out of pocket (had gift certificates to Academy Sports) about 6 years ago. What a gun. The blueing (if you can call it that) is coming off the barrel (I wore it in a holster a quite a bit) and a screw comes loose once in a while, but I can consistently hit 8 out of 10 12ga empties at 50yrds with it.

For the price, I have considered getting another, but I've been holding out for a double action with 9 or 10rds to come out.

But right now I'm looking at spending a bit more for a Buckmark Contour or perhaps if I can find another MkII with 10" barrel for under $500 I will probably buy that. I will also snag a Browning 10" if I can find one.

Oh the fun to be had with a super cheap .22...

I picked up a LNIB S&W Kit Gun a couple of weeks ago at my LGS. It was priced a little under $400 and had only the faintest of turn lines on the cylinder. Blued with a 4" barrel, to me it is the ultimate in .22 plinkers. Got a Hogue Monogrip for it and it definitely shoots as good as it looks!
