Your grandson is one very lucky young man.

That is simply the finest gun case I have ever seen, bar none. "Wow" is completely inadequate.

From here, I've got to say that the entire project looks stunningly beautiful both in the conception of the idea and the final implementation as seen in the pictures.

I've no doubt that you could sell custom made boxes matching that one for any number of firearms faster than you could make them, and for quite a price. Just awesome... and your grandson will always know that he has the first one.

A few answers -

Links to some of the pictures inside the lid:
1) M1C and M1D GARANDS:

For the left-most picture, I used these two rifles, plus another plain Garand, plus the small soldier from the next link.

2) 12 POSTERS AND SMALL SOLDIER (as above):
http://members.lycos.nl/garand/
then click on the bullet that says 'Oorlog & Garand Posters', then click on the poster "My M-1 does My Talking", and you should get the 12 posters.

3) Plans, dimensions, etc. What I have is my design, and since I knew what how I was going to build it, all I had to draw was a simple but accurate cross-sectional view, which I did with DesignCAD. It shows the 'assembly' of the lid, the hidden barrel hinges, the acrylic retention atop the case frame, and the hollow bottom construction interlocking edge and keyed locks. If I can figure out how to post this, I will do so. The case consists of some 30 wooden pieces, not counting the inlay, plus the hardware.

4) I am seriously looking at making several more cases, and perhaps different styles. (Not everyone may need the feature that renders the contents inaccessible except through the lockable bottom.) I believe I have found the means to duplicate the inlays reliably and perhaps even affordably.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks -

Alex

Nando Aqui,

A Labor of Love... and it shows. For your grandson, the rifle itself and last, fine carpentry.

I do hope that you take your grandson in as an apprentice and have him help you while you teach him the skill and that love/pride of fine craftmanship should you decide to build more of the same.

Exquisite sir. I doff my hat to you.

Hmmmmmm... I'm thinking coffee table for the gun room here... I'd insist my friends use coasters tho' ;)
