It's truly amazing the choice we have today for very little cash (inflation adjusted).
LCP / LCP 2 / EC9S / G2C / G2S and many more for less than $200. Have we ever had so many decent choices for less than $200 (in real terms). Move it up to $300 and I don't think you are even making a budget choice. I certainly don't feel deprived be the two M&P M2.0 Compacts Ive bought or my .45 Shield either.
I remember when a decent handgun was $400 ($800 in today's money).
