Went to the local indoor range and put 200 rounds through my Steyr S9 and Steyr M9 at the interactive steel target range (Steel silhouettes with round steel heads that pop up remotely and randomly). This was my first time on a range like this and it was great practice for my pistol skills. I plan to frequent this range more often.

I had never been told in all my years not to chamber a round by breech-loading it. I had never had a problem before, but I did it tonight and got a round slightly jammed in the chamber. Rangemaster told me that it is bad to do, now I see why. From now on I chamber a round from the mag and then top off the mag.

Anyways, to the spoiled part. I've been wanting to get a pistol in .45acp, either Sig 220, CZ-97B, a 1911, Glock 30 or Glock 21. The range only had a G21, G30 and a SA basic 1911, so I rented all three. Now I've shot plenty of glocks in the past and was decent with them (always 9mm or .40 though) and I could not hit a thing with either the 30 or the 21 and the grips on both just "felt wrong." The Glocks felt very cheaply made compared to my Steyrs and trying them out pretty much ended any desire to buy one. Whereas I used to be able to shoot a Glock and thought I wanted one, now I would rather not even shoot one.

The Springfield 1911 was next and although I don't like the skinny feel of a single stack, I was very accurate with it. I shot two 8 shot groups of roughly 1.5" from 7 yards. I was amazed to say the least considering this was only the 2nd 1911 I had ever shot. But it still didn't feel right, I like a wider, thicker grip than a 1911.

So, because the Glocks are out of the running, I still would like to eventually try a Sig 220, CZ0-97B, and maybe another 1911. Any suggestions?

The other thing I was considering is getting a full-size 9mm to go along with my 2 Steyrs (being medium and compact sizes). A Sig 226, SA XD-9 or a CZ-97 would fit the bill nicely. We'll see.

So I have lost any desire for a Glock and feel that the grip on my Steyrs along with a Hogue Handall grip is about the best fit I've been able to find for my hands. Btw, I have about 2500 rounds through my M9 and about 1000 through my S9 (using modified S40 mags to hold 12 rounds of 9mm) and I have not had one malfunction and I continue to be amazed by their lack of muzzle flip, soft recoil and great accuracy. Now if Steyr would just make one in .45acp or .45gap.

suggestions

If you liked the 1911,springfield and para make double stacks that have thick grips.I have small hands and like the single stack.I agree w/ya,the 1911 will amaze you on accuracy.I just bought one and now I want to sell all my other pistols and buy more 1911's.

Forget the para....go STI or SVI for a full grip 1911......

After that you'll just sell the rest. (partially to finance the new guns, but you know.....)

Now we're talking!

I think lycanthrope might be right about this. What are the prices like? (hopefully less than $600 for a decent double stack 1911)?

sti

forgot about the sti,I seriously doubt you'll find one in that price range.you can springer for 475-575 depending on where ya get it.saw one this past week at the gun show for 500.00.

I have to agree with the idea of Steyr pistols "spoiling" one for Glocks ... I have an M40 and an S40 and have never shot a Glock that I liked better then my Steyrs.

I really wish Steyr would have made a .45 version of the GB.

If you don't like the price of the STI, and like a fatter grip and plastic frame, take a look at the Kimber BP series. Very nice "wide body" 1911 for ~$500.

Yeah, I have Kimbers and the STI. The STI is worth the extra cash, but the Kimber/Bul frame double stack is great for the cash. High caps can be pricey though.

I've had lots of pistols. Everyone likes to have LOTS of pistols....but at the end of the day it's nice to just have ONE pistol that fits you. Find that gun.

9mm's

The Springfield XD9 is not a full-sized pistol. It has a 4" barrell so is in the same category as your Steyr M9. However they do have a XD9 Tactical model that comes in a 5" barrell. Love my XD but quite frankly I think you have the polymer end covered nicely with the Steyr, I'd fully recommend the CZ-75B if you're in the market for a full-size 9mm.

for an STI? Uuuhhmm....try $1300 for a base model. :(
Personally, I'de go for the Kimber Poly double stack. It goes for <$600 and it can use Para mags (you gonna need to change the mag release).
