The coolest Ruger Mark ii

So I had to kill some time today and where better than the local gun shop. I have been in the market for a new .22lr plinker. I started a poll on THR a while back and it was decided that the Mark II/III series were some of the best. Previously I had been anti- Mark II/III but I was open to suggestions. Well today I walk in and they have a BEAUTIFUL Mark II on the used rack. This gun is all stainless but very polished almost chrome looking with target rubber grips and a heavy barrel. Its certainly a looker.

But now I have a ton of questions that I need your help with.

1. I have never bought a used gun, I know the BASICS to look at like trigger feel, slide, and overall feel of the gun but I dont know any specifics. If it were a glock or such I would look at the top of the chamber for excessive wear but that does not work the same on a Mark II

2. The end of this gun had a barrel comp on it, it looked after market and removable, any thoughts on these? Positive or negative?

3. This gun seemed very heavy for a .22lr, again not a bad thing since this is a fun gun and not a CCW but just something I noticed. I will mention that the weight was very well balanced.

Make sure the pin (partly visible) indicated by the red arrow is in place. If it is, that is the firing pin stop and the gun should be safe to dry fire.

Check the safety.
Check the chamber face for any damage; likewise the muzzle crown.
Rifling is often hard to judge in a 22, but give it a look.
Check to see if the slide locks back on an empty magazine (not a deal breaker, parts are available. The same could be said of the safety, but it would, IMO, require immediate attention from someone competent).
The comp is probably a Volquartsen; easy to remove if you don't like it or want to change things up (though you'll probably need a stock front sight). It might have other Volquartsen parts on it as well, that's a good thing.
If the price is right (or even close) I would snatch it up. They are getting harder to find.

Not sure how much you are willing to spend or how much the used MK II you're looking at is, but if you have the bucks, you might consider these at ImpactGuns.com. Both are MK II, both are suppressed, and both will cost you. But I think you'd probably enjoy both as well

Buy it. If it seems in reasonaby decent shape. If there are any issues and there probably aren't, they can be addressed. These guns are built like tanks and are over built for a .22. Don't dill dally or it will be gone. MK II's are getting very sought after.

Anyway, yes, Ruger .22s are simply awesome. Buy it!

I've never had a more accurate pistol that the MKII / MKIII series Ruger rimfire pistols... These are hole in hole accurate.

I have 1991 Mark II Standard. It is very basic, nothing like the pics seen in this thread. They are accurate and a fun plinker. If you struggle with the reassembly, check out a couple vids on Youtube. Once you know the trick, it is pretty easy.

I have the Ruger 22/45 black with 5 1/2 inch bull barrel. Love it. Never had a bad Ruger (carry the LCP daily). But must warn you.....they're an ammo glut.....never can satisfy their appetite..........

Thanks That's a DIY parkerizing job and a little paint on the grip emblems. The trigger is bead blasted stainless steel (an AMT Lightning trigger with over travel stop).

Congratulations!

The MkII pistols are wonderful . . . one of the best values on the market when new, and STILL the version I'd want if I needed to replace mine.

I have the long (6 7/8") TAPERED barrel version, simply called the Target Model. Enough heft for wonderfully stable target work, yet light enough to swing fast shooting in bowling pin matches (.22LR class of course) and for carrying comfortably in the field.

Mine has the left-handed Volquartsen grips on it. KRS and I are both left-handers. I HIGHLY recommend the Volquartsen grips. They are incredible and make a difference . . . and feel good too.

My best time, reacting to the buzzer from the low ready . . . until dropping all six bowling pins during a match, was 2.20 seconds on a single table (at regulation 10 yards) in the match. EVERYTHING came together . . . I've never been able to replicate it even in practice. It was a very competitive and almost magical day . . . and I went for broke . . . and won.

I LOVE the Ruger MkIIs in all configurations, but especially the tapered AND the heavy barreled target models. You've got a great gun! Enjoy!

PS: BTW, the suppressed model is SO QUIET. I don't own one but have been around when one was fired. It is quiet when the bolt is free to eject the spent cartridge BUT . . . when ya lock the bolt so the fired cartridge will NOT eject (TO KEEP THE NOISE DOWN) . . . wow . . . you can barely hear it shoot!
