At 100 yds I was shooting my reloads (Sierra 85 HPBT, 35gr IMR3031,
3rdX Norma brass) and Federal 100gr Shock. The rifle was a Rem700VLS,
9.125 twist.

I wanted to try the Federal factory 100's for a possible whitetail hunting
round.
My reloads (admitedly target) were either X or called, if 3/4" out. The
Federal was a mess, at least two 3" fliers of 10 and no way to call.
My twist is 9.125. Are the 100's too heavy? The paper holes are round so
they seem to be stabilizing.

I can't believe the factory hunting ammo is bad. A flinch from a bit
heavier load? Any ideas?

The scope is a 3-9 Nikon with Warne steel rings, every screw Loc Tite.

Have someone load your handload and the factory load alternately in the magazine so you don't know which one is chambered. That eliminates your flinch. Get your sight picture, breath control, trigger control. If the Federal still flies wild, it's the ammo.

Assuming 6mm, I can't see 1:9.125 sending a 100 grain slug 3" at 100 yards.
Maybe someone smarter than me can confirm.

In a given rifle, some loads shoot. Some don't. No way to predict it.

Try another factory load if that's what you want.

When I shot both Federal and Remington 100gr. The Federal was Faster and spread all over the target. The Remington was abit slower but much better grouping.

The Federal, the gun, or me ?

I shoot a Rem 700 CDL with the same twist rate of 1 in 9.25 in where the most widely used twist rate for the .243 is 1 in 10 ... A faster twist rate gives you a slight edge over the slower / longer twist rate when it comes to using heavier bullets . Of the factory ammo in 100 gr. that I had tested prior to doing my own handloads the Winchester 100gr. PSP flew the best at an honest 1in. at 100 yds and was followed closely by the Hornadys, then the Remintons and finally the federals . My partner who shoots a savage 110 with a 1 in 10 twist had the same results . My hunting loads are 95gr at this time but will be doing some 100gr load work before long . Am prepping 200(+) cases today and waiting for the weather to break . Note my log in handle and feel free to drop me a note from time to time and I will let you know how it goes and we can compare test results . Hope this helps ,,,, 10 SPOT
