I found this an interesting read that mirrors the dangers of lacking knowledge of animal anatomy when hunting. Do you study new game animals before hunting them to find out where internal organs are located, and decide your shots based on which may be best presented to you?
 
I liked how in the article it said that the heart was right behind the shoulder. Of course, folks not familiar with anatomy will realize that the shoulder is actually very low down on the deer. Right above the elbow would also be correct, if folks had a clue where the elbow was.

For somebody looking up deer anatomy on the net, if they found this page and used it as a guide, they would completely miss the heart as the heart is misplaced too high in the image.

he shot 17 times? you would think that if it hadnt worked after the first 10 or 15 it just MIGHT be a clue to shoot it somewhere else! imho this guy was pretty dumb. when i dispatch an animal i shoot for the base of the skull in the back of the head. i havent seen many critters live when their brain has been disconected from their nervous system.

I'm surprised that he hit it 17 times. I've shot with some of our local cops and very few impressed me.

When I taught Hunters Ed I had pictures of game animals at different angles and had crosshairs drawn where the kids needed to aim . I did this after a friend told his nephew to shoot a deer behind the shoulder. The kid hesitated a second and ask, " which shoulder, the front or the back".

When I took my SIL on his first hunt I showed him the pix. He shot 2 deer perfectly on his first day out.
