I've been tossing around the idea of buying a 410/LC .45 for a couple years now. Chuck Hawks didn't seem to think much of the Judge. All I'm looking for is a home defense besides my 12 ga. I got a hole gettin burned in my pocket for something. Who's got either and what do ya think of em?

Personally I like 410 bores but even if they were legal in my state I wouldn't bother with those for the following reasons:

With 410 buckshot you get muzzle velocities in the 700- sub 800 fps. range. At 750 fps that is 87 ft. lbs. per pellet. You will also get pretty piss poor penetration at those speeds. You also get patterns that open up PDQ which may or may not be an issue.

You will also get a lot of muzzle flash from it with 410 ammo.

With 45 Colt ammo, they are known for mediocre accuracy. If I am going to use a 45 colt, I'm going to use a SAA of some flavor or another. I don't see the appeal of feeding something with 2 1/2" or 3" cylinder a 1.5" round because that round has better punch.

Feeding one of those bird shot for defense is silly in my opinion. Looks good on the shoot n see targets they so fondly use in their advertisements but you're likely to piss the guy on the other end off.

Don't care what they advertise they can't handle the 3" loads with any regularity just ask my bro in law Johnny 3 Fingers....just sayin...not joking... 4th shot with 3" buckshot the gun literally blew to H###....

Have the Governor. From what I can tell (there being no Judges in MA), it seems better than the Judge handguns.

Still trying to figure out the best use of the .410 shells. The .45 ACP/Colt versatility is neat. In theory, the accuracy with the .451 bullets should be questionable in the Gov. Now that the good weather is returning, I expect to answer some of my questions!

I have a Judge, practice with it occasionally and keep it loaded with 1/5 oz slugs. Great truck gun.
The shells are rated at 1830fps (of course a longer barrel). I still am confident after two chest shots my target/assailant probably won't be feeling his best.
It is simply a matter of what you like, what you practice and your proficiency.
A 22mag in the right situation will save your life but so will a bazooka. Choices, choices.........

Thanks Steve. Good video. You prompted me to do some research on the 45 LC. Hornady makes a 45 LC load specifically for the Judge. May mix a few of those with some 000. (45 Colt 185 gr FTX Critical Defense)
