What is the largest caliber firearm legally available to civilians? Is the Barrett M82A1 still legal or did the federal government intervene?

I have heard, but never seen, that there are at least 105mm howitzers in the registry as transferable Destructive Devices. I have seen 90mm artillery pieces for sale as DD's. 40mm grenade launchers are relatively common, as are 20mm anti-tank cannons. All are legal to own. If you mean largest caliber available from a Title I FFL on a 4473, yes .50 caliber is the largest modern rifled caliber available. Barretts fall into this category, along with Armalite AR50's, EDM Windrunners, and a host of other makers. So far, only California's lawmakers have seen fit to intrude here.

Yes harvester of sorrow. What I meant was not limited only to the largest standard bore rifle. 105 mm Howitzers??! That's insane! But I like it.
I'd like to get hold of an operable 20 mm vulcan phalanx, or two if you don't mind. I will mount them to my roof. lol. But all kidding aside, the arsenal you mentioned is amazing.

I believe the 105 has a range of around 12 miles
In the ad that I saw for the 90mm cannon, it said "this is not an artillery piece for beginners." No kidding!

A .600 Nitro Express SA revolver?
Brick, that's valid. The NFA provides exceptions for "non-military calibers larger than .50 caliber," but not too many things fall into that category. I believe the intent was to keep older big game guns, like 4-bores and your .600, from becoming DDs.

I may be mistaken, but is there a .700NE? Even if that's in my imagination, I'd be willing to bet that the answer to your question is one of the big bore DG calibers.

I believe black powder is exempt from the .50 caliber DD rating. I think it has something to do with sporting purposes?? Or maybe blackpowder is just exempt. Either way, I'm pretty sure that's why you can get a .75 caliber musket...

Yes, Virginia, there is a 700 H&H.
I haven't shot one (will never shoot one) but I've seen one. Impressive, but 600-650 grain .50 cals at 2400fps is enough for me.

There's a fair number of cartridges out there in on-beyond-Zebra land, actually. .585 Nyati, .700 Nitro Express, .577 Tyrannosaur, and a whole slew of monsters from JDJ, incluting the mighty .950 JDJ (3600gr @ 2200fps, from a necked-down 20mm shell. A few were built on honkin' big McBros actions. Bring money.)

We had a 106 Recoiless at the ski area for avalanche control, but I think that it was just on loan from uncle sam. The patrol boys sure had fun with it though. (Attention all radio frequencys, one large shot. WOMP! Shot up, shot over, shot in! WOMP!..., rumble.)(Giggling is now heard over the radio).

Well, 12ga is .72, what's 10ga? Can you get a rifled 10ga barrel and slugs to match?

Can you shoot slugs in a 4GA? Wouldn't that be a 1/4 pound ball of lead? I think that would make a 2GA slug a 1/2 pound ball of lead. I'd love to watch someone else shoot one.

Whoa! That's over a half-pound of lead screaming along at twice the speed of sound. Generally you need an afterburner to do that. What does that come out to in terms of ft-lbs of energy?Tamara

The soft limit is .50 caliber, but there are a number of exceptions. Shotguns and blackpowder are exempt. Anything larger than .50 caliber is still legal, but it's considered a Destructive Device.
Largest I've heard is a 155mm artillery piece. I think it is vastly amusing that I can make my own 155mm artillery piece, pay a small tax (much cheaper than the cost of the weapon), and be fully legal. But I can't make my own MAC-10, regardless of how much tax I'd wish to pay.

My guess is it's either 10 ga. slugs or a custom 2 bore. BTW, for anyone interested, there's a really nice article about the old Big Bores in the latest copy of Field and Stream. The info about muzzle velocity and recoil is kinda funny.

IT IS AWSOME!!!!!! 4-M2's each set at 550RPM, 1000rds per gun, TOTAL destruction of vehicles at 300-400yds.
He reloads alot of ammo. He also has a 577/450 MH in a Maxium Gun. Loads black powder for it and you should see the fire.
