I live in NC. In around 26 days I'll be 18. I have a limited learners permit that will expire when I turn 18. Would I need to get a real license before I get a shotgun or would the learners permit work because it has my picture & birthday on it?

NC law says the ID must be valid, which is generally taken to mean unexpired. You probably ought to go down and get a photo ID from the DMV, it's only 10 bucks and could save you some hassle.

Won't getting a photo I.D. mean getting the official drivers license? I don't want to have to go through a road test right now.

can't you get one of the regular state-issued photo IDs for people who don't drive?

Generally VALID ID is required, your permit is no longer valid once it has expired. Some places might take it, and it may go through all the checks w/o a red flag, but then it might not.

My advice is to A) go get your license, B) renew your permit if possible, C) get an ID card (like a license but wont allow you to drive), or D) buy your gun on the last day that your permit is valid (I assume that is your 18th b-day).

Better to deal with it that way then risk a red flag on a background check in a state like NJ.
Edit: Sorry, read NC though NJ...still the less hassle the better

Good Luck

Can't speak for NC, but in Fla when a license or ID expires it is no longer valid and no longer acceptable as ID.

I have been rejected for having the wrong address on a valid license which makes it invalid for gun purchase

Can't you get a regular (18 and older) learners permit when you turn 18? That's the way I understand it.

The limited permit (and provisional licenses) are for under 18, and a regular permit (and regular license) is for 18 and older, which is why either of the first 2 would expire when you turn 18. I don't think you'd even have to take the written test for the 18+ learners permit (not sure) since you already have passed it.

Hurry up and get a new non-driver's ID before your current permit expires. Once your ID expires, it'll probably be a much greater hassle to try to prove who you are.

He won't be able to get one of those ID cards until his permit expires. It's only for people who don't have any kind of license. They won't give him one if his permit is still good.

Just go get your drivers licence and you'll be all set.You won't have to worry about anything expiring for 5 or so years.

The problem with that is I'd have to take a driving test & written test. I might just get another Learners permit.

I just tried to get a license last Tuesday. I waited in line for 3 hours:mad: :banghead: . Then when it was my turn, we went throught the sign test & out to the car for the road test. Then I find out that since my left brake light was busted*, they couldn't give me the test & therefore my license.:cuss: :fire: :banghead:  . Since I don't have any other car to take the test with & the only place to get a new light for my car is the dealership for around $150.00, I won't be getting my shotgun for a while.:( :banghead: . HOWEVER, I registered online with the SS** & now recieved my registration card in the mail, will that work?

*It loked like someone took a bat to it because the rest of that side was alright.

**Not the Nazis's. The Selective Services.

Junkyards have lenses, but sometime they overcharge.

Try your local redneck auto parts store. Sometimes Kragen, Auto Zone, or similar can get stuff like that for a lot less money.

My store is located next to a auto repair place. The guy who runs it already checked all the places locally for us*. The only place to get one is the dealer.

Anyway, will the draft registration card work?

*He's on the level. We are friends.

I don't think so, does it list your state of residence.

Why not just get a state ID card.
Don't know about your state but in Fla I have both a DL and a State ID card

If you get stopped and ticketed for "defective equipment" (the tail light) you have 2 options. One, fix it $150.00 and show the ADA the paperwork indicating it's fixed, he/she will most likely dismis the charge. Or you can go to cort, last time I recall court costs were $110 plus the fine and you'll still have to get the tail light fixed. In addition it would appear that you don't have a valad NCDL so if you are stopped for the light, and found to be NOL, that's a manadortory court appearance.

In Fla at least, you do not have to have a proper brake light cover as long as no white light shines through and the red light is visible.
Assuming that your red lens is what is broken go to any auto parts store and get the transparent red tape designed as a temp fix, until you get the proper lens.

Are hand signals no longer recognized as signaling devices?
