I am new to guns, hunting, and "all that" stuff. I've been doing research for a while now and I like the Maverick 88 shotgun. I was wondering though will the gun shoot slugs right outta the box with out changing the barrel?

Should work fine. Have fun with it. I am assuming it is a defence model with the 18.5" barrel.

Yes. Would not recomend shooting slugs through a full-choke or 'extra-full turkey' choke, but other than that, load up and blaze away.

My "HomeLand Security' shotgun is a 20-year old Maverick 88, with the 18-1/2" cylinder-bore {no choke} barrel.

When I have it in "Woods-n-Water" configuration (28" Mod-choke) I have put just as much game on the table as my brothers with their much more expensive Rem 870 & 1100

FWIW, the Mav 88 is a Mossberg 500 with a few minor changes. Assuming you get the smoothbore barrel, it will shoot slugs. Get the rifled slugs though, not sabots. Sabots will fire, but accuracy will suffer. If you have the rifled barrel, sabots will run fine.

I've had mine a few years now, it's a decent shotgun that will last a long long time. I'm pushing 1000 rounds through mine (which is nothing compared to what some shotgunners do) and haven't had a single issue.

I have a Maverick 88 and have shot several slugs through mine.
I prefer to use the Improved cylinder choke or the modified choke when shooting rifled foster slugs through it.
