Here's how I spent my Christmas vacation, or part of it -- building a 10/22 ultimate. It's called the OgRifle because my wife and I are Team Og Rof a Klaw on www.geocaching.com. (sdrawkcab it lleps.)

Final configuration was:

  • Volquartsen Superlite receiver
  • Green Mountain 18" fluted barrel
  • Kidd trigger
  • Kidd bolt
  • Ruger .22 mag bolt handle assembly, cut to length, spring replaced, and peened
  • Leupold 6x20 EFR scope with target reticle
  • Leupold quick-release Weaver rings
  • Revival Industries Trailblazer stock in buckskin brown
  • Pachmayr sling mounts (a story in itself, that :( )
  • Brownell's Latigo sling

:D

Seems to like CCI Minimag. Tried Lapua Midas M but got poor groups and occasional vertical stringing. Bought some Federal and CCI target ammo to see if it will do better or whether it's just got a taste for the cheap stuff. ;)

Now it's time to learn howta shoot! :D

In fairness, it's the best out of a dozen or so groups I shot with MiniMags. But the others weren't far off. :D

Picked up some Green Dot and some Federal Gold Match today to see how it likes them. Wanna try some Eley and Wolf Target but no local suppliers AFAIK.

My CZ 452 tends to prefer mini mags as well. I gotta wonder if they are doing something a bit different at CCI these days.

I want to build a custom 10/22 after I get some other guns. I already have a 10/22 so I think I'll probably get a Magnum Research stock and one of their CF barrels and then maybe just keep on building it up a piece at a time. Your 10/22 is very nice great job.

Are you going to bed the action? My 10/22 has a GM bull barrel, PC hammer sear & trigger, and Hogue rubber stock. After bedding it mine does .4" 10-shot groups at 50 yds with Mini-Mags.

Seems a shame to have such a nice set-up and not bed it.

Had a lot of fun building mine, didn't go as far as you did though. Now I need to build another that's more suitable for hunting.

humzai; check out www.rimfirecentral.com everything you want to know and more about building up a 10/22

Hi, Cortland,

Tom Stafford at Stafford Sales, who sold me the stock and barrel, suggested just bolting it together and shooting it. I bought the Volquartsen bedding kit, but decided not to use it because the Revival stock looked like it already supported the barrel and receiver the same way that the VQ kit does. VQ uses their kits to bed their rifles, so I figgered why mess with a good thing?

Also, I'm still just getting the hang of this. My groups might tighten with practice.

Yup, I've heard about Rimfire Central. ;)

Thanks for all,

Nice shooting and that's a great looking rifle, Stafford Sales sure has some nice stocks. I am thinking about modifying my 10/22 but have too many other projects planned. Of course, with results like yours, I may have to redo my plans.
