Saturday...shooting wobble trap with 3 buddies. Next trap over is a practice trap. Nice young guy, maybe 18 or so with his mom, shooting. His mom comes over toward us, and says "our shotgun is jammed, can you help us?"

I had just finished shooting my round, so I says, "yes ma'am, I'll be right over.

I walk over, and the young man has a brand new Remington 870 Express with laminated wood stock. Shell jammed. I took it from him, and pulled on the slide, and sure enough it was jammed. I pulled hard on the slide, and it ejected the shell.

I say, "Did you clean this gun?".

The young man said, "Yes, sir (That's right Yes, Sir), I cleaned the barrel perfectly. "

"Did you clean the action?"

"No, Sir."

"Do you know how to remove the bolt and slide?"

"Yes, Sir."

"Ok, you need to completely dismantle the gun, and clean it thoroughly, and lubricate it sparingly, and you won't have these problems.

I go to my car and get the spray can of Rem Oil, and spray the bolt and actuator bars, and instruct the young man to manipulate the slide while holding the release down. He began operating it in a very timid fashion, and I told him, "young man, cycle that weapon with authority. You can not hurt it." He immediately began to do so, and looked at me with amazement in his eyes, and said "It's smoother already."

His mom says, "Thank you so much, is this a good shotgun?"

"Yes, Ma'am, it is about as good as you can get. I have 3 of them. Thank you for letting this young man learn how to handle a shotgun, I sure wish more moms took the time."

It was a good day at the range, and I didn't shoot worth a damn.

Excellent post Snarlingiron.

Too many people are under the mistaken idea that "cleaning" a shotgun is mainly about getting the inside of the bore spotless, when, in fact, that has almost nothing to do with the reliability or functioning of the gun.

Mistake #2 that they make with regard to pump guns is that they think they have to be "gentle" with it. This actually CREATES problems. They need to operate a pump gun as if they are mad at it and trying to break it. Then it will work well. :)

Thanks for improving my day.

And thanks for taking the time to help out a new shooter.
