a hypothetical question...

If you guys were dropped down on an unknown alien world and were only allowed one rifle, what would that rifle be and why?

Springfield Socom M1A.

Tough, accurate, faster handling than a full size version. (I'd like to keep it handy for close encounters and for any long range shots I might get)

Plus a Xenomorph wouldn't stand up well to 7.62X51mm.

(I know I had to say it)

I'd pick an M41A Pulse Rifle. 10mm explosive tip caseless is the way to go. :D Someone had to.

But seriously, I think a bolt action .30-06 in scout rifle style setup with back up iron sights. Manual action is very reliable, power enough to take medium to large sized game (if the planet has medium to large size game as we think of it) and you can buy .30-06 anywhere.

Oh Brother.

Where do these things come from.

Here's a hypothetical for you.....

If you were dropped on an alien Internet forum, what's the least relevant or logical situation you could possibly manage to concoct and post?

Why, oh why do these things exist and where do they come from?

Geez....

:banghead:

anything semi-auto or full-auto with decent ammo capacity good reliability and light enough to carry slung across my back while i use the alien weapons

i'd still bring as much ammo as i can carry just in case the aliens are hostile but not technologically advanced... or their advanced weapons are not even remotely human usable

If you're interested in taking this argument to its logical conclusion, please check out the books linked in my signature.

Choices by those characters include the M1A, M1 Garand, and M4-type carbine. For weapons beyond strictly rifles we also have a Remington 870, Beretta 92FS, Glock 17, Baby Eagle .45, and a S&W 625 .45 Model of 1989.

On a more exotic level, we also see a couple of GAU 8/A 30mm weapons systems and a couple of GAU 19/A .50 caliber weapons systems.

If you're gonna go, go in style.

Well, depends on the aliens. Are they big or small? What level of intelligence do they have? what level of technology do they have? How many are there? Am I all alone or do I have backup? Am I able to get my ammo supplies replentished or am I to make do with what I bring with me on one trip? How long am I going to be there?

for me, it would have to be the ak47. ok... i know there was a history channel thing that the guy was asked the same question, and his answer probably has merrit with most people. the ak47 is reliable, has a more powerful round than the m16/ar15, and is fairly light.

+1 what Loomis said. Without knowing some details of the native flora and fauna, if there were some sort of tool using hostiles, etc., it's a pretty hard call to make. Depending on the particulars, a .308 or .30-06 might be overkill or woefully inadequate. A Ruger 10-22 might be the best bet, or maybe you wouldn't want to step out into nature with anything smaller than a classic African big game rifle.

Bolt cannon, all the way. (WH40K reference)

2nd choice - Phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range. [Hey pal, just what you see!]

Ibtl?

Hey, that's the whole darn movie on that link! Now I gotta stay up another hour to watch it.

the OP stated "unknown alien world" which means you have no knowledge of what you'll encounter...

which is why i said something reliable with good ammo capacity and bring plenty of extra ammo

and when you get there hope the aliens are not hostile...

HK 91. They don't break and they are accurate. Plus they are heavy enough to keep you firmly rooted to the ground even in .1G.:D

"unknown alien world"

In that case, I won't settle for anything less than an M2 bradley(swim capable) with a turret mounted quad ma deuce.

If we're talking real world weapon, I'd take an AR-15 in .308.

If we're talking Sci-Fi it be a toss up between a 2cm Plasma rifle out of David Drake's Hammer's Slammers or a 40k Bolter. I'd choose based on how bad the recoil happens to be on a .76 Caliber Mass-reactive Explosive Bolt.... :p

30-06 Spfd, because even in an alien world there's a good likelyhood that some alien Bubba is going to have ammo for it in his alien truck.

:D

An AR-15 in .308 would be.....an AR-10.

This is way too hypothetical to guess. Is the world you are on atmospheric at all? If not, all your ballistics on a long-range weapon would be off.

Is the life-form you are fighting carbon-based, crystaline, or gasseous? Will projectile weapons harm them at all?

I say we dust off and nuke the place from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. :)
