The realities of high cost of ammo

I have a feeling that the people that are convinced prices will never come down are simply trying to justify waiting in early morning lines and paying these inflated prices. In '08 people were saying the same thing, the sky is falling! Guess what? Availabity and prices returned to normal and in some cases, even better.
It's still falling just not all at once, that's the problem with a slow motion train wreck you don't feel the wreck till the end.

You are ASSUMING some things here
1- That prices will come back down to where they were
2 - That you will be able to buy that particular type - all it takes is some decree that "military" cartridges are illegal for civilian use - just like Europe

Is that how it went in Europe? Explain please.

I get sick and tired when people in this forum compare the US to other countries. True some things are more expensive abroad, like gas and bullets, but then again, a college education is free or subsidized & so is medical care. Over here we pay up the a$$ for those things but ammo and gas is just a bit cheaper.
Wow
It is amazing how many have NO clue as to what is happening.........truly amazing how STUPID we as Americans are and thinking the world revolves around us and that we control the market for commodities............

breaking - try getting out of your momma's basement......you will see that most folks can have guns in ANY cartridge EXCEPT military ones - been that way for decades

At least one had mentioned selling ammo at an inflated price as well a few months ago. But now they only complain of the high price and go on and on about how it is NEVER coming back down and that people need to suck it up and spend all their money for whatever they can find because it is like gold. I wonder how many auctions they have running on GB.

I could barely afford to go shooting before the panic and I really can't now. I'm going to hang on to what I have to make sure I can hunt during the upcoming season. I'm seriously considering buying a crossbow for deer.

I can't help but appreciate the irony of this whole situation, though.
Funny you should mention hunting ammo. I won't shoot it much either. I have other FMJ rounds that I would use first.

Maybe it's only here but thing are cooling off in certain sectors. Stopped in the local store and there were several cases of 7.62x39 for 370 or .37 per round.
Had a double star 6.8 selling for 980.00
He had several cases of 223 as well but I did not pay attention to price.
7.62x39 is a bit higher than pre panic but it's coming down.

JRWhit:

Yesterday in a West Point MS pawnshop (Hwy 45), there was an AK-74 with folding stock listed for about $800, and there might have been an AR-15.

Today in a gun shop in Pensacola FL on Navy Blvd, an AR-15 in .223 was listed for $1,000. There seemed to also be an AR-10, or whichever AR type with ".308" on the price tag.

People are finally getting the word, or they have not visited these shops lately.
"GunBot" in the last week listed 5.45x39 ammo for .18/round. I saw it over the span of a few days.

Wow

It's true we don't control the market but....
America will not turn into the next UK any time soon.
I know that's what the progressives want, and they have been causing some stink lately.
But mark my words....
Our next President will NOT be a Democrat.
I promise.
Quite frankly, a rebellion may be on the horizon and even if some states don't see it yet....the Fed does.
;)

PBR - must be nice. The two superstores in this area (~ 5 mi. apart) have shelves that look like "Old Mother Hubbard's". No .22, no .223, .38, .357, 9mm, .45, etc. Rifle ammo is mainly limited to .30-06 and .270.

I've found that however many times you shoot a piece of paper, it's just as dead as it ever was.
That's code for big fat whoop to all the shenanigans.

I don't have enough of either to do a whole lot of shooting. I do have molds to cast shotgun slugs and enough lead and components to keep me going there for a while.

I bought a rifle with a .308 barrel last spring and was promptly laid off from my job due to a company closure which prevented me from accumulating ammo or components in that round. Now that I'm back to work, there are almost no ammo or components to be found.

My thoughts, as well. Glad someone else has noticed this trend...

They are never going to come down to that level again, at least not as long as a communist wannabe dictator with the entire democratic party media machine backing his every move is in charge.
What do you base your statement on? Prior experience?

Ignorance on the part of some may also be keeping these prices high. We all know that Tula is absolute junk ammo, and never worth paying a premium for. Yet...some will continue to buy it thinking they are getting some type of deal.

Unless you're looking at some Hornady TAP ammo in 223/5.56, even the best M855 ammo isn't worth over 80 cents a round.

I've finally accumulated enough ammo that I can sit back and shoot comfortable for a period of time.

In the past two weeks I was able to pick up 3 bricks of .22lr for $40 each. Killed me to pay it but that will get me through the summer without fear of running out. Have 5000rds on order with a 120 lead time. Cabelas has had brass 9mm for $15/box lately. Luckily I loaded up on reloading components when ammo first started getting scarce.

The gun problem will cure itself shortly as they are not consumables like ammo. The major problem is Politics and quite frankly the score is 3-0 in the anti's favor. As a result millions of new people have entered the hobby thereby producing a surplus of shooters for the limited supply of ammo. We have a shortage. We will continue with the shortage as long as National and State politics remain in the drivers seat. If there is any movement toward restrictions on internet sales of ammo or higher taxes on ammo the situation will get even worse.

There are more storms on the horizon such as the 2014 mid term elections and the general election in 2016 and God forbid there is another mass shooting.

The primaries for the 2014 elections will start heating up this summer. If there are no strong Second Amendment people running then its all over for us. The 2014 mid term elections and their primeries is our Waterloo If we don't have people who support us running for office and winning.

As for prices the outside influnces are still in play and will be until the general election in 2016. Prices will not be returning to pre panic levels. We will be lucky if they are no more than 20% higher than pre panic prices. Now the high prices you see are the result of shortages caused by an increased number of new people coming into the hobby buying ammo and members of the hobby also have increased their purchase patterns. Plus there is a convience factor to consider. You don't want to stand in line before the store opens and you want more then the store limit so you have to pay for that.

Do I have anything on gunbroker? No. Now if someone wants to pay me 90 cents a round for 1,000 rounds of 223 I'll sell it to them then buy 2,000 rounds of 223 @ 45cents a round. I'll do it in a heart beat and I have. They got what they wanted and I got what I wanted. Both parties to the deal were happy. The buyer got the convience of buying 1,000 rounds in one purchase versus having to stand in line before the store opens 50 seperate times to make their one box purchase of a 20 round box of 223. The choice belongs to the customer.

If I ever get to the point where I do not have a single RF left I WILL buy one fifty round box just for use in my Baretta Bobcat.

The days of my 10 22 with hi cap mags are probably gone forever.

As you didn't preface your statements with "In my opinion..." or something similar, we can assume you're basing your comment on research and prior experience. Please enlighten us.

Torian:
It is fortunate that even Wolf was considered junk ammo back in 08-'09, when I had 5,000 rounds of both Wolf and Monarch. Now down to my reserve "min. ammo" level of 2,000 rds. in x39.

Lots of people still consider modern Russian ammo corrosive. This must have been a factor in the fairly recent low prices. Let's call it corrosive!:)

If Russian x39 ammo had been much higher back in early '08, I Never would have considered buying the SKS and Mini 30.
The same goes for Russian .223 regarding the used Mini 14.

I have a wild card 4 U all. When, not if, when we have another mass shooting somewhere in this country and Obummer and Bloomberg start talking **** again, and we lose an additional 5 states to antis, it will throw the whole market into a tail spin that will take years to recover.

MagnunJoe: That is a very realistic prediction that some of us are uncomfy stating in public, but it is just a matter of when.
The nightmarish sequence that began in Tucson seems to have no end.

Even with plenty of ammo, this eventual probability makes me consider buying an 880-rd. case of fairly cheap 7.62x54R, then later looking for a MN.
My MNs were sold in '08-10.

we don't need another shooting to extend ammo cost/supply issues, a big storm or even $6.00 diesel could inflict damage to a stressed resupply chain.
