I think the AK variant was a Galil and I think I remember seeing a FAL.
 
In that superb "imfdb" display, it says that the director told Pacino to fire his FN 80 (whichever) on semi-automatic only, to avoid "endangering bystanders". This makes no sense.

There is no possible way that the actors used live ammo in those city streets.
Even experts would not be allowed to use it.

He must have meant that the character would have used semi-auto for that reason.

Yeah, let's let a bunch of actors loose in L.A. with full-auto's and live ammo.
 
It means that is what the real cop would hve done using real ammo. They wanted to make it as close to a real operation as possible.
