The "sights" on mausers

They aren't small, they are "precise."

I really like the sights on my Swede M 96. It's probably the most accurate rifle I own.
 
"precise" is great for a bench shooter, but for a battle rifle the old adage comes true "best is the enemy of good enough"

this is one reason many nations switched to peep type sights
 
Mosin sights are better.
The rounded or pointed top of the front mauser sight is too hard to focus on, unless you have good 18 year old eyes. 1903 springfields have a very narrow blade tip but are easy to focus on because they have a square profile.

The swedes got it right by using a front sight that has a squared off top.
 
They're made for people with twenty year old eyes. I take a file and open the V up to a U which is much friendlier to sixty year old eyes.
