So I was walking around the Suncoast gun show today with my wife and daughter, and saw a very clean Russian SKS in really nice shape listed at $400. Nothing I really needed or even thought about before, but it was pretty, and both me and my wife got a kick out of the folding bayonet. The dealer was willing to come down to $375 for cash, but my limit was $350. I respectfully made the offer, and he respectfully declined. It occured to me that next time I should go on Sunday afternoon, rather than Saturday morning, to find dealers more ready to deal. What have other people found trying to bargain at gun shows?

best time to bargin is on the last day, last hour, last thirty minutes if you can afford it. don't go back to a vendor more than once, it shows your desperation.

if he won't drop the price, eh, how much do you want it?

You want to approach the vendor before he starts to put everything away...It may be an hour or two before the show ends. If he is resigned already to hold on to the gun til the next show, he will be less likely to deal on it. In fact, if you go in early on Sunday in this part of the world, the shows are so slow on Sunday mornings during church that he will be happy that he has a customer at all.

Just my 2 cents...
:)

You passed on a good deal, especially for a Russian SKS variant. That is if it was in resonable shape with a good clean shiney bore. There is always another gun show.

i see the Yugos have gone up in prices in the $300 mark. If Russians are the sought after, i think the $375 is a fair price nowadays. Keep looking. If its in excellent condtion with all orign sling etc, id buy it if its $375 esp if it has the hardwood reddish stained stock and with chromed bolt . If its blackened bolt (refurbed) , i wont even touch it unless the price is $ 250 the least.

I know it was a fair deal, but it wasn't anything I really had set my heart on - if anything, I'd like my next purchase to be something scoped in .308. I set a limit in my mind, and wasn't able to come to terms, and I'm O.K. with that. Not only that, but since I had never considered one, I've also never done the kind of research that would make me comfortable picking one out, especially from a non-local dealer. As someone pointed out, there's ALWAYS another gun show.
