Looking for something special to add to your collection? Want something that stands out in a crowd? Want to look "tacticool?" Well I give you the tactical hat: the most pointless way to EDC a knife ever. (More at bottom)

In all seriousness, I've been thinking about the gun, knife, and outdoors industries and the changes in attitudes we've seen in the past years. It seems to me that the industry has been catering more to people who want to be "tacticool." I know that these types of people have always existed, but it seems like there have been more of them in the past few years, and that they have been driving the market, quite possibly to the detriment of firearm quality and aesthetic. Any thoughts?

I liked the old hats with the Indian arrow apparently stuck through your head sideways!!

Now, that's tactical to us in the John Wayne crowd!!

That's just bad. Can't even imagine supporting the extra weight. I'm told by the hat people I have a big head, so I'm used to supporting a lot of weight up top, can't see how anybody could do it if I can't. On the other hand, I can actually see a Swiss army hat being useful...put small light tools in the bill or whatever...not much weight and you could have a magnesium firestarter, fingernail file, tweezers, etc. If it was done well I could see it being a hit with the camping, fishing, prepper crowds.

I see there's only one knife on it, will the next version allow the EDC of two? :)

The reason the 'tacticool' scene is becoming more popular is the change in perspective. In generations past, the Cowboy was appealing because it was the symbol for being self sufficient, able to handle anything, able to defend others, and basically just be the manliest American you can be.

Today the image of those traits has shifted more to the idea of a Special Forces 'commando' type of symbol. They are considered the modern elite warrior, with the same traits as above. The shift has just changed from the Cowboy being that symbol to the military man, probably because of the publicizing of what they do with camera footage, then fictional movies, games, etc.

The idea is the same, everyone wants to be bad, just now its the tactical symbol instead of the cowboys. I do find some of the products they come out with hilarious though. And if people are willing to buy them, more power to them.

I realize the hat is a parody, but I agree, I'm tired of every firearm, knife, accessory, piece of outdoor equipment, etc. being touted as "tactical".

For every 1/10 of 1% or less who will actually use such items in a true tactical situation, a much larger segment of the remaining population would like to think of themselves as being cut from the same cloth. There's a reason terms like "keyboard commando" and "mall ninja" were invented.

To these folks I say, get a freaken life. Same goes for the copy writers of the ads perpetuating this. If I never had to hear or read the word tactical again I'd be very happy.
