The funny thing with a Walker is that it is sure to attract attention. Yesterday again, shooting with my Remington at my local range, I had a few people coming to see the idiot making so much smoke ( and incidentally, how can someone shooting with an old muzzleloader score so much tens while others shooters with modern weapons were cutting holes in the white of their targets. 
). But after my "serious" shooting, I got Mr Monster Gun out of its case and after the very first shot with a nice little 55 grains load, all heads suddenly turned in my direction, and after the smoke cloud settled a bit, everybody rushed to my booth to have a look at the howitzer I must have been shooting with ! Many a shooter who never saw a Walker in his life gave it a try, and I'm sure Mr Aldo Uberti's sons will increase their profits in the following weeks

About a month ago there was a guy at the range shooting a 44 magnum. I believe it was a Taurs revolver with the long 8 inch barrel. He was about 30 yards away from me. I was shooting my 44's 1851,1860. Then i loaded up my WALKER. a little more than 55 grains almost around 58 grains. With a vegtable fibre wad. Little bore butter over the bullets. After this guy shot his revolver and the little crowd was around him. He let one of the range officere shoot it. Well when he was finished i took all three fully loaded. My WALKER, my 44's with 25 grains black. I started off with my 1851, then my 1860. Then as the smoke cleared a little and everyone started to shoot. I noticed the guy was about to shoot his 44. After his first shot, i lifted my WALKER and fired off a round. All attention turned from him. I took my time and fired off the other 5 rounds. When i was done i had the barrel pointed up in the air and i turned around. The guy at the end was all smiles and gave me the thumbs up. Everyone was asking questions after that.
Later on that morning, he came over to see what i was shooting. He brought his 44 magnum. It was pretty cool. I wish i had my camera with me. We lined them up on the bench, smallest to biggest. The WALKER of course on the bottom. Everyone was looking at these massive revolvers. We talked a bit. He let me shoot his 44 magnum. I let him shoot the WALKER. he was really into it. Wasnt to fond of the loading. However he really like it. As for his magnum, Well it was lighter than the WALKER in weight, recoil was less than expected. partly due to the size and length of the barrel i imagine.
One of the best days on the range.

My new WALKER kit.
The Big Brown Truck delivered my first Walker today.
It's a Uberti Walker kit that I got from DGW.
I think I'm going to finish it in an antique style using some techniques I've been reading about over on the CAS City forums. It should be a fun project and even more fun to shoot when it's finished.
Have any of you guys finished one of these kits? Or have any experience with aging finishes?

I could not imagine how it would be to see 32 THR WALKER members at the range shooting their irons. What a site that would be. The smoke cloud would be so huge.

Is it normal for the forcing cone on the walker to ocassionally rub the blueing off the front of the cylinder?

I havn't recieved my Walker yet from Taylors and co., and I ordered a 2nd md Dragoon, this morning, @ 314.00 from the Possible shop, good price, I couldn't resist. Now I''l need a lot more powder, when both of them arrive.
What are some good starting loads for the Walker, and Dragoon,???. Ive got 2f, 3f, B/P, and 2f 777,in my inventory as of now. I am going to use .454 Hornady rb in them, along with felt wads, and lubed seals, I also have some T/C bore Butter. I was thinking of starting with 35 grns 3f, and working up.
I hope to get out this week end and bust a few caps, again.

I think that is a good preice for a Walker.
With the the Dollar at reccord lows,I think the importers are are going to be raising they're prices, just to keep even.
I just ordered a Dragoon from The Possible shop at $314.00, just to beat in flation.

I already bought 6 and built 5 of these kits from DGW. The latest one is nearly completed. As I write, the barrel and the cylinder are nicely cooking in a jar full of sand for a cool "charcoal blue" finish. A good "aged look" is easy to make : bury your Walker in the garden for 60 years, you'll see how aged it'll look like then
. More seriously, The method I use consist of using a slow rust solution (many brands existing on the market), and after each boiling, do a vigorous carding with steel wool. After two or three passes, you get an even light to dark grey (depending of the solution used) that seems aged enough.By the way, forgive me for my poor English, you all know how lazy us French are as far as foreign languages are concerned.

Rebel Dave its almost up to you on how much you want to put in a walker. Using a volumetric measure. i was able to put up to 56 grains in mine. Then i used a .030 fibre wad then a .454 ball. Even though they say a walker will holde 60 grains of powder. i dont see how. The ball will stick out to far and the cylinder wont turn. Thats max load though. Just like any other gun you will want to work up your load to find the best accuracy. A good starting point would be around 40 grains of black. followed by wad and a .454 ball.

The cylinder cooled off over night, here is how it is looking like :
The barrel had a grease spot (shame on me !) showing on the left side so I had to start the whole process anew and it's cooking right now for the second time.

I had been careless while degreasing, and of course, it showed after cooking.
The process for charcoal blue is a fairly simple one : polish, degrease and heat ! Heat slowly and evenly, until you get the color. Too heat slowly and evenly I use a cast iron jar fille with river sand, I put the prepared metal in and I let it cook in the kitchen for 2 to 3 hours. After two hours, I brush off the sand to get a look at, and when the metal is dark purple, I cut the fire. It'll turn blue as it cools. Oil it and you're done. Don't forget that the obtained shade will darken when oiled ! So must give it a few tries before getting it right. On the picture, there's my old Dragoon, which turned out ofter cooking a splendid shade of blue, and after oiling it became...well, you can see by yourself. I kept it like that because it's fairly original. A lighter blue, such as the cylinder will give the color you see on the finished Walker above:

After seeing old hunter's walker with the white backstrap, I put mine in vinegar, deblued it and nickel plated it with a plating kit I got on ebay. It came out pretty good, more flitz will even out the plating, but it's a nice accent on the Walker and I like it more than the blued backstrap.
I might char blue the barrel and cylinder, but would need more details. If I do this, I'll do it to my Walker and Dragoon.

Beach sand is salted ! You might end up with some nice rusting if you use it. Charcoal blue is so called because it was done in charcoal before gas furnace became available. Here is a scale, in Celsius, I'll let you put it in F°, don't want to do the maths so early in the morning !
