...is that they are addicting. You start, wanting magwells, checkering, Novaks/Heinies, beavertails...

...you realize the dream...you may repeat it....and then...

The GI Parkerized, arched magwell (with the lanyard loop), sans-beavertail and bling calls to you...a siren's song.

I dunno, sometimes a plain parked springer just looks beautiful. Ya know? Even next to a Jardine Valto...even better if it is solid-steel, tuned, vise-like lockup, tight fit, match barrel...hiding under the parkerized finish. Dunno...maybe it's me.

So who has a 'sleeper' 1911. Lets see pics. 1911-1945s.... or GI on the outside, tuned, polished, and no mim on the inside. kart barrels in parkerized, plain wood grip clothing....

Anybody with pics of their favorite GI 'sleeper' 1911?

Yeah, I have only four 1911 pattern pistols and I keep looking at more. Three of mine are in 45 ACP, one is in 10mm. One of the 45's is a Commander model. I keep looking at the Officer's ACP size pistols, even though I know it is harder to make them run reliably and they really aren't any smaller than my S&W 640-1. Then I start looking at 1911's in 9mm and 38 Super, maybe another 10mm. Then there are all the options on finishes and sights. It boggles the mind!

Well I had a sleeper Springfield GI, but ship fitters disease took hold.

First the sights changed. A Greider trigger. An EMC wide spur hammer. A Kings bushing up front. New grips. Then the a tactical safety. A mild melt of the slide. Well heck, now it needs a new finish. Some internals changed too, but those aren't visible (EGW sear, Brown disconnector, hammer strut). SA MSH with loop replaced the Springfield ILS housing.

Everytime I put the tools down and called it "done", the Browells catalog called to me and my wallet. They are enablers! Damn them and their $3.95 shipping. It makes it to easy to justify small orders!

Here's a picture before the safety and refinish. It's off at Mac's Shootin' Irons now and will come back with GunKote over parkerizing.

I really like your springfield, Gunsnrovers.

I'm saving up, which will take a while, to get a springfield mil-spec and there are only a couple of things I might change. Mind if I ask about a couple of parts?

How much was the trigger? I really like the length and style.

Does that hammer prevent hammer bite or do you find yourself having that problem at all in the first place?

Also, what kind of sights did you add?

Finally, would you mind mailing it to my FFL so I can get a feel for what features I like? :D :uhoh: Hehe, just kidding. But not really...

Spooky, EMC hammer and Greider trigger were from Brownells. Don't know the prices off hand. I had to bob the hammer as it bit hard, but I like the wide spur a lot and it has a captive half cock notch which I also like.

Materdei, I like the grips a lot. Very grippy and thin. I had to file down the bushings a skosh for them to fit. Also had to use low profile screws.

I have some G10 grips from Larry Davidson on order. Curious to see the tactile difference between canvas micarta and G10 material.

Ruger, sorry if this is a thread hijack, but I guess it's still to your point.

The fiddle factor with 1911's is pretty much unlimited. :D

The trouble with 1911s

Have had several 1911s, Made a Para Ordinance hi cap from a Brazilian Colt,
next was making a 1911 from a parts kit, it shot well, A friend with a Gun Shop went out of business and sold me a Dan Wesson 1911 for cost plus tax. This one's a keeper, I did change the grips, love it!

I was never into any 1911s but once I bought my first Kimber, I was hooked. Why are there so many things you can do to these thing?? :cuss:

Nope, not just you. I'd rather have the twins that John Smith used in Last Man Standing than the gold ones Caster Troy had in Face/Off.

Speaking of sleepers, a buddy of mine has a Llama that has outshot STIs. He got it during BLET, a lot of the guys were poking fun at it, and then they wanted to know where he got it. Turned out the pawn shop had ordered ten, they were sequential numbers, and were excellent pistols. He said comparing his to the Llamas he's handled since is like night and day. I though he was full of it. Then he let me shoot it, along with about three other people that though he was full of it. He wasnt.

GunsandRovers: No problemo. Sweet pistola. Does look HUGE tho! ;)

Zach S: That's what I'm talking about (or nearly!). Seems like an ideal IPSC gun! (I can picture a poor shooting LesBaer bigot, asking me what I'm shooting!)

I'm thinking of installing a Yost-Bonitz retro on one of my pistols, too.

Does anybody (*ahem*, Gunsnrovers, :D ) have an image of this sight from behind, showing it's sight picture?

I agree with you on them being addicting. I've got three Colts, and am always looking for good deals on others. I prefer Colts, but have recently been looking at the Rock Island Armory and the low-end Springfields. I do disagree with you on one things, though......I prefer to leave mine stock. I only tinker and replace things if it's broke, and it is only with original type components. I'm not a huge fan of modifying things, which probably explains why my 1985 Harley Davidson still has the original paint on it. :D

Since my last reply in this thread I put another one on layaway. A slightly used parked Mil-Spec Springer for $450. I've got to change the trigger, MSH and grips so it'll fit (well, the grips on it fit me, but they're smooth wood, and IMO, have to go), and I'm thinking about adding a 610R and using it for a decdicated house gun. I may have it Gun-Koted, but I guess I'll wait and see if the gripsafety annoys me to the point where I have to change it, and the hammer, and get a trigger job... That's another problem with them. Just like cars, one modification leads to two, and then three, and then....

I've often thought about building a sleeper out of my AMT. The problem is accu-rails arent cheap. I think there's just enough of my factory rails left to be machined away for accu-rails, lol.

Addictive doesn't cover it. I recently noticed that Alumagrips has started to make tactical grips, but since I've got good grips on all of my 1911's(Alumagrips on my SA mil-spec, Simonich Gunner Grips on my SA Ultra-Compact and my Kimber) I figured it was time to buy a new pistol to put the grips on.
