The UN, Gun control and Death

The U.S. can't get out of the UN and the whole organization disbanded soon enough.

Geek:

Re the story you linked to: "Dying gasps at the U.N.", which might be a very apt title, just as some individuals seem to lack instincts that lead to self-preservation, it might be just so with the UN also.

As is the case with some segments of Muslim culture, a desire to turn the clock back, that too might be part of the problem with the French.

I was just thinking about the UN and its representation the other day. If Kofi Annan is in a position to govern anything, who in the heck elected him?

Unless I missed that line on the ballot, UN representatives are appointed to their position. I suppose it could be argued that they are just like US Senators before the 17th Amendment, but those Senators were appointed by an elected body and thus represented the will of the voters, kind of like the President's cabinet.

I guess this works for the US representative to the UN, but in countries without democracy or representation, UN appointees must be cronies of the King, Dictator, Ruling Party, whatever. How in the world can they even pretend to represent worldwide democracy?

Does anyone know how many UN representatives are appointed by governments who are in place without any sort of voting by the citizens/subjects?

I attended a conference where Richard Marcinko (the Rogue Warrior) spoke. He said we should run the UN out of the US and use the empty buildings to make money. He got a nice round of applause for the suggestion.
