the Weaver or picatinny mounts...

I've been looking at these in some catalogs and can not tell the difference between the mounts. Is there a real difference or are these interchangeable systems and doesn't matter?

I tried the search and got nowhere.

I can't tell one from the other when looking at pictures in catalogs.

As I understand it, Picatinny rings will mount to either Weaver or Picatinny rails. Weaver rings will only mount to Weaver rails....

Actually it's the other way around. Weaver grooves are .180" wide, while Picatinny grooves are .206" wide. Further, the grroves on Picatinny rails are spaced .394" apart, center to center. There is no groove spacing specification in the Weaver standard.

yep - I screwed up. You can mount either Weaver or Picatinny rings to a Picatinny rail, but you can not mount Picatinny rings to a Weaver rail (obviously, you can mount Weaver to Weaver, and Picatinny to Picatinny). I should know better as I typically have Picatinny rails (mostly by EGW - good people!) and Warne rings

It's all good. I often have to remind myself, "wait, no, wider groove takes both style rings, narrower lug rings fit in either groove".

You always want to avoid being a POW (Picatinny On Weaver).

Weaver On Picatinny is okay.
