Still had unsorted stuff in the garage after the last move 4 years ago. Place was a real mess so I took the week off from work and tackled the job. Actually, I was taking the week off, anyway. Took 15 hours to get it to where it's about 95% done and I 'm taking a break.

Boxes were stacked to the roof in the moving van and up on top were the reloading supplies. Well, numerous boxes tipped and spilled and I have been finding loose bullets in everything. Furniture, clothing, everything. Reach in or under it and you'll find bullets. My wife thinks it appropriate given my obsession with guns and shooting but to me it's a nuisance to keep finding bullets everywhere.

I finally got all the ammo sorted and stored on shelves. Did a quick inventory and came up with nearly 7,000 of handgun ammo, about the same of rifle ammo, 1,200 shotgun shells (750 of which are 00 buckshot or slugs) and 10,000 rounds of .22 Long Rifle (hey, it was on sale). Right at 25,000 total (and the reloading bench is stacked with empties waiting to be reloaded).

The sad part is I am still thinking that I don't really have enough in some calibers.

So, is there supposed to be a downside to this?

When we moved, a buddy came out of the house carrying a pistol, and asked me if I knew I had it. ( was in a dresser). Bad thing, I had forgot that it was in there. Good thing was he didn't show it to the wife :p

Actually, I'm coming to the conclusion that having odd ammo scattered around is quite tactical. I once made a point of consolidating all my loose stuff in ammo boxes, only to have them ripped off. I always try to keep some spare .38's and 12 ga. shells around in odd places.

Bullets everywhere!!!

A few years back the Politicians were considering an Arsenal License if you had more than 1000 rounds of ammo or 1000 primers.... I have more than that rolling around in the back of my truck right now!!! :)

I heard a while back that it was illegal to own over a certain amount of ammo without an FFL. I was thinking I heard 20,000 or 50,000. I guess there isn't any truth to that?

i really hope you meant actual bullets and not cartridges...
that really bothers me when people mess that up...

but yea, one can never have enough ammo...

and and arsenal liscense for 1K rounds?!?! HAH! 1K rounds is peanuts! my grampa would be way over the limit, and his "collection" would be nothing compared to all you guy's stuff...

I have heard the same thing from a few people. But the limit was "5000". Or was it you couldn't buy more then 5000 at a time.

I know a old guy who said he always keeps a standing count of 10,000 round of 9mm, 45acp, and 308 at all times. I have no more then 2000 rounds.

Wow, I thought I had a lot of ammo in the house, and I only have about 1200 rounds or so. But then again I only have two handguns. Well, I'm picking up a new Ruger p345 today, when my ffl calls me back that is. Why do you guys think you need so much ammo on hand. Paranoid about EOTW senarios? Stocking up for when Uncle Sam tries to take away our guns and ammo, or what?

There are numerous reasons (beyond EOTW paranoia) for having what might seem to be a large amount of ammo on hand.

10) If you buy in bulk, you get better pricing.
9) Some of us shoot in excess of 1,000 rounds a week on average.
8) Reloaders tend to have a lot of rounds loaded at any given time.
7) Some folks buy ammo all at once, say around tax return time, rather than piecemeal.
6) .22lr is frequently bought in 500 round bricks for less than $10; those little suckers add up quickly.
5) A lot of us have large collections of guns, in a wide range of calibers. Therefore, in order to feed them regularly, we have to have a lot of ammo.
4) Sometimes you come across a great deal that you can't pass up, such as Bass Pro Shops offering of UMC 9mm for $3.99/50 rounds two years ago.
3) Full-auto weapons go through ammo quite rapidly, so their owners tend to stockpile.
2) Some folks are just packrats who can't dream of not having a large supply on hand.

And, the number one reason:
1) It's a free country and we can legally do so. :)
