I just started reloading and this evening decided to size a bunch of brass. About 5% of the cases would not fit in the shell holder or fit VERY tightly. Do I discard these? file them to fit? force them in? Seems the rims are a tad thicker than the rest. Is this normal? Most cases just fit right in with no problem. (RCBS J.R. press)

Check the rim of the case head for burrs. some times the extractor will mark the rim causing a burr that will cause it to stick in the shell holder. A small file will correct this or just discard it and pick up another one...And if it is an amerc don't bother add it to the scrap pile...

I had the same problem with one lot of R-P cases in 44 mag. If you want to save them, you might try another shell holder. If your local gun shop is cooperative, take one of the thick cases to him and try it in shell holders of different brands.

New info after 2 years!! I was reloading some more .45 Colt yesterday and discovered what the problem was- It is primers that protrude past the base of the shell! I guess upon firing a few primers ooch out of the pocket. When I try placing them in the shell holder to reload, the primer drags and causes a tight fit. If I put them in my Lee AutoPrime and reseat the primer they fit fine. Wow- can't believe it took me this long to figure out my problem. I hope this helps someone else avoid the same situation.

BTW- woo-hoo 1000th post!!:D:):p:rolleyes:

That would indicate you are shooting very light loads in your .45 Colt.

At normal operating pressure, the case would be re-seated over the primer from the pressure driving it back against the recoil shield.

I'm also very surprised you don't have to use two hands to get your revolvers cylinder to rotate with fired primers protruding that far.

I'm only shooting it in a 92 lever action. Would have had a .45 revolver on the way, but my better half frowned on what a nickel plated engraved Colt SAA would have cost me. We got bedroom furniture instead- and I actually get to sleep IN the bed:D

hahahahahaha

best formula for 45 colt

228 grain lead round nose. Lee mold

35 grains goex 3fff
