Thin grips on a 1911 .45, are they worth it?

I have an STI Trojan 9mm with the thin STI wood grips, I like the thin grips on this 9mn, I only want the standard grips on my .45ACP 1911's.

I have dainty little girl hands. Strong, but small.

I have very thin micarta grips on my Wilson. I can get a better "feel" and index on a gun if it's flat on the sides. I've even converted revolver grips by flattening the sides.

And, I like my guns grippy. Checkered grips, back strap and 25 LPI checkering on the front strap.

My buddy, a former world class IPSC shooter like flat but hates checkering. He wants everything smooth for last nano second adjustments on the draw and while shooting.

The difference may be, though he can outshoot me just damn near on demand, I actually carried a 1911 as a duty gun for 20 years. Sweat and stuff makes a slick gun hard to hold onto in the real world.

I've got these with a flat bottom for a mag well.

Ok, so regular grips, some (but not a bunch) of checkering.

What about stag grips? Do they make 'serious' grips? That is, do they make them usable for defense?

You can get micarta and G10 very thin and strong. Stag is usually a little thicker fo strength.

But stag, with its natural texture and porosity is pretty grippy for me.

According to sizing charts I have medium sized hands but medium sized gloves are always too tight and uncomfortable so I buy large sized gloves. That establishes my hand size. I don't care for slim grips. I have a very nice set of Chip McCormick grips just sitting in a box because of that. I've been making my own grips for all my pistols but one for several years now. That way I get exactly what I want.

It's purely a matter of personal preference. You should use whichever fits your hand better and allows you to shoot more effectively.

I know people who absolutely LOVE S&W "Target" grips on an N frame revolver. I can't STAND them because they're way too big and don't fit my hand. I have Pachmayr or Hogue grips on ALL of my N frame Smiths. There are people who HATE them and will have NOTHING but "Targets" or "Magnas" and a "T-Grip".

It's your money. It's your choice.

Have to agree with Deanimator Post #33. What fits you is what you should use, and you'll have to try them to find out. I have found grips that looked good to me did not work so well for me, and grips that didn't look good actually shot well for me. I have smaller hands than John Moses Browning apparently and the 1911 grip frame is large for me. I was surprised to find that relica military issue checkered grips, sorta thick looking to me, were the best I've tried on my 1911. EveyonesMMV.
