Thinking of selling the AR; should I?

However, the possibility of a Democrat being elected in '08 is very real and some part of me thinks that hanging onto it is a very good idea. On the other hand a pistol caliber carbine would actually let me shoot.

I don't think you have that much to fear. They learnt their lesson in 1994 and theres simply not enough support to crack down on firearms in the Democrat party and we will have gotten rid of Cheney and Bush on their war against all non sporting rifles. A far bigger risk would be the likes of Guilani being elected and using a presidential war order to limit all firearms to like he did in NYC.

If you are simply not using the ar15 and don't want it anymore then get rid of it and find it a good home. If you are in an area where civil disorder could take effect massively (pretty much most major cities) then it might be worth keeping. If you are out in the boonies and don't have to worry about shooting through several walls it might even work for home defense, but then you going to lack from no practice.

A pistol calibre carbine are rather common. I like my Marlin 94 in .44mag and its rather a lovely older lever action. You can pick up the likes of a high-point carbine in 9mm, .40 or .45acp for rather a cheap price and give you lots of use but have a small magazine. There are others like the Beretta CX4 Storm but thats going to cost considerably more. Theres also kits to transfer your handguns into a carbine by adding a new slide and barrel and a few other parts.

Keep the AR

Yes on adding another rifle.

There's a fistful of 9mm carbines out there. If you're rich, the CX4 is nice. Otherwise, there's Ruger, Hi Point, Kel-tec, and so on. These same guys do carbines in .40 S&W and .45 ACP.

Then there's the Marlin series. Suggest 1894C in .357/.38 calibre. The .44 mag and .45 LC are both good, but if the cost of plinking is a factor, the .357/.38 is cheaper to shoot (.38) and yet will take a game load (.357) giving it versitility.

And then, of course, there's the .22 LR; you DO HAVE a rifle in .22 LR, right? Yeah, I knew you did.

If you sell the rifle, you lose a lot of hte value of the rifle - which, if you wanted to use it at a later date for something like praire dog or varmint hunting, could still be done.

I'd say get a 9mm upper. You can get an RRA for about $430 shipped, I believe, and you could then swap back and forth at whim.

I sold my first AR, which was also my first gun, for some ungodly reason. Everytime I think of that I kick myself and I've vowed to never, under any circumstances sell another weapon. You will feel the same as I do if you sell that AR, believe it.
