I'm thinking of trading my AK towards a Swede Mauser 6.5 x55 in an older custom wood stock, carbine length. Barrel may have been shortened, but the crown looks nice What should I be looking for, as to receiver condition, etc? I would be using factory fodder. What have been your experiences with this cartidge? Thanks in advance.

Look for matching numbers on the receiver, bolt handle, bolt shroud, safety, floor plate and trigger guard. The bolt face should not be pitted or badly discolored around the firing pin hole. The barrel bore should be pristine with no darkness, roughness or pitting. The muzzle crown should be uniform and without nicks or dents.

6.5x55 is a great cartridge, accurate and relatively soft-shooting. I have a few rifles chambered for it.

Swede Mausers are my favorite milsurps. I have a beautiful M38 that is a fantastic shooter. Go for it! You'll find that the 6.5x55 cartridge has a well-deserved reputation for being highly accurate, flat shooting and quite easy on the shoulder.

Well, I went for it. Thanks for all the help guys. Now to put my Burris 4x on it- it has modified Leupold bases on it, and go find some ammo. Geez, why do I always buy on a Sunday, when most of the gunshops in my little town are "Christian" closed. God bless, and pass the ammunition.

After 4 applications of Wipe-Out, I found a beautiful shiney bore. And noticed it has a Limbsaver recoil pad. Barrel is 18 1/2in, and the Burris turned out to be a good choice (the only scope I had laying around), because it has some extended eye relief, and the mount and rings on this Swede are quite a bit forward. So, its not a collector, but hoping its a shooter.

The Swede rifles are probably the best shape of any of the milsurps. I got one dated 1915 that looks like it came out of a shop yesterday.

Not to mention, the 6.5x55 is my personal favorite round. Great for just about anything, the Swedes were about 60 years ahead of us in figuring out that smaller bullets sometimes produce better results for their milguns.

Do you reload or use factory ammo? I read somewhere that there is quite a varience in bore diameter among the 6.5x55. Is this true of the Swede's?
