A junior ethnic-minority senator out of nowhere becomes President with a career politician as VP. Something horrible (God forbid) happens, and the now President career politician, a rabid anti-gunner, uses the incident to push through radical gun control measures, all while a shocked country grieves.
Almost sounds like a script for a variation on the Manchurian Candidate.
