I still have a hard time believing this one, but here it is.

Can anyone guess which cartridge caused this wound in a 130-pound doe??
(Without cheating and scrolling down to the bottom to read.)

Answer:

A 9mm Auto with 124 grain Hornady XTP bullet at approximately 1250 fps.

I'm guessing this is a handload, but still...

Here is a link to the article from which this image was taken.

Am I recommending this? Oh, heck no! But I think it's amazing.

Doesn't surprise me...I've killed quite a few deer with a 45acp and have seen some pretty impressive damage done by the "old slow poke".

Not intended to start any 9mm vs 45 debates...just sayin pistol rounds with good bullets (like XTP's) are all too often underestimated.

Right, Ridge, this isn't intended to fire off any 9mm vs. .45 debate.
I hope the mods close this thread in case that happens.
And, until this photo, I was one of the underestimators.

...Dang, Earl...

...that's impressive!!! I'm a .45 kinda guy, too...but you can't argue with success...where was that round placed??? Anywhere near the heart/lungs shoulda pulled the plug fast...I've had to eat crow on the 9mm in the last 3-4 years with the new ammos out...now I restrict myself to good-natured jabs every once in awhile...unless I'm carrying my Ruger KP95DC...then I be real quiet...;)

Stephen is a super nice and very knowledgeable guy...his articles convinced me to try the XTP bullet a couple of years ago and I owe him several fine venison meals for it.

Cool! Maybe Stephen can enlighten us further!
I've been around guns all my life, but I'm still a noob in certain aspects.

Thanks for posting that, Ridgerunner. That was interesting.

So I guess the stories that my dad's friend used to tell about taking deer with a .38 Super 1911 weren't so far-fetched after all.

Deer aren't hard to kill

Thats for sure!

Its Bambie for crying out loud!

I think that photo is a scam... It had to be some sort of new fangled .347-Wissim round to produce that much damage!:neener:

I used my Marlin Camp 9mm to fill a doe tag few years back, had a hot loaded Rem GS 124gr over Power Pistol. neck shot at about 100' dang near took it's head off.
don't own a chrono so don't know what fps that slug was tracking but I'll bet more than 1250.

Well by a strange coincidence my right knee did get mangled one time, but it wasn't quite so bad and I didn't take a picture of it. Ah, when I think of the Kodak moments I've missed!

impossible...everyone knows you can't shoot a deer with anything less than a 300 ultra mag... just use the search function here to confirm that.

kyle, there are just as many threads about how you don't need anything larger than a cap pistol to take grizzly. The bottom line is, extreme views either way are silly. Both small and large calibers will do the trick on whitetails.

Hello. jim in anchorage: The picture is real and as described. I have no idea why that particular wound was so significantly larger than others using the very same load from the same firearm. I didn't "document" via different photos from farther out and probably won't in the future though if I remember to do it, a loaded cartridge with LOA known might serve as a "reference" as to size or some sort of compact ruler. In any event, I told the truth on this and folks can believe or not. I was pretty surprised by that wound's size so I photographed it back in 2002 when I shot that deer.

I had initially believed that a chunk of bone must have been broken loose and preceeded the bullet but that was not the case after checking the carcass. The long and short of it is that I do not know why that particular shot did that much damage. Wish I did.

I think it is an interesting fluke.

Best.

Bullets sometimes do strange things when they hit bone and muscle...I can't tell from the pic...what part of the deer is that, with the big hole in it?

Hello. Inside of the left upper front leg (relative to the deer) shoulder area where it would be attached to the torso. The exit wound on the outside of that shoulder is quite a bit smaller but I don't have a picture of it. The one that I do have is not that great as it was getting dark.

Best.

To me...that explains the damage.

It may seem a bit "far fetched" to some...but that hole was most likely caused by the same set of rules that blow out the whole bottom of the bag...you know, when you fill the bag with air, close it off, and smack the bottom of it with your hand. (the big "POP" theory)
