(Update, Grand Rapids, September 8, 2004, 6:17 p.m.) Police say a man robbed a Grand Rapids jewelry store in broad daylight. The store's owner and an employee took chase, firing a gun at the suspect.

The robbery happened around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Herkner Jewelers on Monroe Center. A large crowd had gathered at nearby Rosa Parks Circle for a ceremony for the new Grand Rapids Art Museum when the gunshots were fired.

Mark Reinhart had a bird's eye view, literally, of the crime, as he was washing windows high atop Monroe Center. "I looked over and I saw a guy holding a gun and I heard two more shots after that," he told 24 Hour News 8.

Jennifer Idema, a hot dog vendor, was also near the crime scene. "I saw a gentleman running out of the jewelry store, two guys in suits running after him. He (the suspect) was holding a handful of jewelry and money," she said. "A black sedan, I think it was a Lincoln, pulled up, threw the door open, he (the robber) jumped in, then the two guys in suits and ties drew fire on the car."

"He put the gun back in his pocket and he ran back toward the jewelry store," adds Reinhart.

The store owner didn't hit anybody, but a bullet did shatter the rear window of an SUV that was passing by with two people inside.

Those people weren't hurt but were pretty shaken up. "All of a sudden I heard a huge explosion and I just put the brakes on and said, 'Oh my God, what was that?'" said Sue Pachulski, the driver of the SUV.

24 Hour News 8 asked authorities about the store owner shooting a gun. "It would be for review of the prosecuting attorney and probably be a better question for the owner to answer what was in his mind at that time that he fired the gunshots," said Lieutenant Carol Price of the Grand Rapids Police Department.

The store owner had no comment.

Authorities are still looking for the robber and another person who may have been driving the getaway car.

So now jewelry thieves are "gentlemen"?

I'll tell them - a guy just stole a crapload of stuff from the man's store in broad daylight, and he wants to get it back.

I agree, but shooting into a crowded street blowing out windows in passing by SUVs is not going to make the rest of us CCW holders look good. The guy did have a CCW but let it expire.

I have noticed that too. It seems that whenever the news describes a crime, the criminal is described as "gentleman."

It's moot.His "threat"left w/the theif.He had no (in Mi)legal reason to leave the store & shoot @ the BG.

Also, that area is FULL of pedestrians at lunch time.Yesterday was a bright, sunny day w/temps in the mid seventies. One more thing.FWIW, GRPD HQ is about a block away....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every time i hear that term used on COPS i just want to shoot the tv.

While i can understand the owners frustration of watching his lively hood run out the door i can't see where it justifies risking innocent bystanders.

How does this make CCW look bad? Millions of gunowners behaved peacefully that day. :scrutiny:

Dont disarm an entire movement because of the actions of an individiual.

You only look bad if you associate yourself with them. Since they ran out the store with the handguns in their hands how would that affect a CCW holder? A CCW was never needed to keep a firearm in your business or residence.
It's a shame we got gun owners that panic because the anti-gun owner may think something wrong of them in any situation.

It makes us look bad because he had a CCW and was a jackass that fired recklessly ino a crowded street. What if he hit a child ? You know that the ANTIS would be all over it "Blood in the streets... Its for the children" ect...

But just like I predicted he is very well connected with in the social order in GR so the media just droped it.. We will see if the Police do the same.

IMO, firing a gun near innocent bystanders is only a part of the irresponsible action. According to Michigan CCW laws, one has to deem themselevs in imminent danger in order to utilize their weapon. Certainly, the jeweler was no longer in imminent danger after the thief fled. This is an attempt at renegade justice, and should be completely unacceptable to law abiding CCW holders.

I can understand the frustration that the jeweler may have felt after being robbed. However, as CCW holders, we have a much larger responsability to control our emotions when carrying than the general public does. The consequences of our actions can be devestating.

Just my $.02

Hmm, maybe not. While I wouldn't do what he did or tell anyone else to ever do it, there is something called the fleeing felon rule in MI. I can't remember the case name, but it allowed citizens to use lethal force to stop someone that had just committed a felony. There was a robbery in the Lansing area about 3-4 years ago at a video store. The clerk chased the robber out of the store with a small bat and caught up with him 3 blocks from the store. He hit him several times and ended up killing him. The prosecutor referenced the fleeing felon rule and said he couldn't prosecute him.
